Forums - Gaming - EA Abandon Dedicated Handhelds? - Mobile Gaming the future or the 3DS' successor?

Depends on their ability to find the core gamer market in phones, which in turn depends on marketing and the ability to create the appropriate presence on the notorious appstore/playstore

Well, I guess I mean more in the sense that a game can generate more revenue by selling 4,000 units on Vita than by selling 100,000 on Steam. I think we'd all consider the Steam audience to be almost entirely comprised of "core" gamers, but they are very price sensitive (though probably much less so than mobile gamers).

Then again, it might not be correct to consider mobile gamers the same sort of tightwads that make up so much of the Steam audience. It seems that a lot of them think games should be free but have no problem paying for instant gratification within said games.

"We were supportive of both of those platforms (3DS/Vita)"

Indeed, their support for these platforms almost rivaled their unprecedented support for the Wii U.

What 3DS/Vita games does EA even publish?

FIFA

Pff, wow, so basically nothing.

it's ea, that tells you all you need to know.

If Nintendo is smart with their next platform, I can see EA supporting the handheld indirectly by supporting the console due to the unified library.

Sony and Nintendo brought this upon themselves when they released such limited function devices in 2011. At that point Apple and Google had already paved the way, put up signs, and installed flashing lights, pointing where the mobile device market was heading for a good 4 years.

All Sony and Nintendo had to do to strike it huge, was to release fully capable Smartphone versions of the Vita and 3DS. Had they done this both devices would easily have 5 - 10X the amount of sales they have now. Both companies lost trillions of dollars, because instead becoming the defacto platform like Google Play and the App Store, they are now not even worthy of the most simple software.

I hate to see the way things are going, but I don't lay any blame on EA for this. It is simply impossible to justify building games for a user base of ~50M people, when there is a user base of 1 Billion+ waiting to throw their money at you.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Aren't their smartphone games doing like really well?

Sim City is pretty good on mobile for what it is. My friend was obsessed with that Simpsons game too.

If Nintendo's next handheld is about a Wii U in horsepower I wouldn't mind seeing some EA support. FIFA, NHL, Sim City, Star Wars, would be OK. I mean I'm not holding my breath, but it would be alright I guess.

Maybe some of the appeal for EA would be that they could just make one version of a game which they could sell to the portable and home Nintendo audience, so maybe there is some appeal for them there rather than having to pick and choose between the Wii U and 3DS like it is now.

I've never even heard of any EA handheld or mobile games before.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Wish some of these had come to Vita:

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

3DS successor will do fine; EA will never support Nintendo platforms however since realizing they can't compete with Nintendo's simply higher quality stuff.
