Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will the potential of Splatoon and Mario Maker be let down by marketing?

I don't really think they hold much potential to begin with. You can push sales for any game with marketing but I don't think it will make much difference in this case.

What they should do is crank up the marketing on XCX. That's a giant game that has multiples of the combined work hours of Splatoon and Mario Maker in it. It deserves sales according to that.

Doing the max they can to put Xenoblade X in most gamers hands  is a favor, no it is an obligation they have towards the gaming community! They should spend at least the same amount that they spent on MK8. I would prefer that they make an even bigger marketing campaign but one can dream...

Minoru Arakawa would usually say to the disgruntled marketing team at NOA that marketing is just a big waste of money and point to the original Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong as proof of that. Two titles that didn't get any marketing, and ended up selling gangbusters.

I believe there are still people at Nintendo who share his ideas - which says that if a product holds enough quality and appeal, it will sell itself.

While I do believe that it should be the case, selling based on one owns merits, in real life it doesn't work that way.

Gamers are carpet bombed by marketing, a day only has 24h & gamers only have a certain budget for games, so as good as a game can be, it will only start selling based on reputation when it reaches a critical mass.

With the bloody competion that has become game selling, an effective (& generally costing) marketing is the best way to achieve that critical mass the quickest!

Nintendo needs to step up their game on that department & quick!!!

The closest comparison to Splatoon I can think of is Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. A cartoony colorful multiplayer third-person shooter with team-based combat.
Sales on 160 million (X360 + PS3) install base: 1.25 millions.
Sales on 30 million (X1+PS4) install base: 0.75 millions.

So far Wii U have only nine games over 1million in retail, most of them relying on well-known Nintendo franchises.
I think it will be hard to get sales over one million for Splatoon.
Although it will be a good lesson in online gaming (along with MK8, Smash and upcoming Devil's Third) for Nintendo.

Mario Maker can be somewhat compared to LittleBigPlanet 3 as they both are plattformers with cartoony graphics and are reliant on user-created content. Sales on double the Wii U install base is around 1 million in retail.

Mario Maker will crush LBP.

And Plants vs. Zombies is nothing like Splatoon. Nothing is. I do get a Jet Set Radio vibe from it though.

...or maybe Goldeneye?

I think Mario Maker 2.0 or whatever will be on the next Nintendo handheld/Fusion device, so it'll be something that continues on for a long time, so even if it doesn't light the world on fire on the Wii U, it'll have other chances.

Good question and I think it will be. Nintendo has always had a problem not advertising their games enough. Smash and MK8 did get a good amount of advertising from what I observed, but smaller less known games haven't. For that reason I think both Splatoon and Mario Maker will suffer from a lack of advertising.

Limited marketing outside of Nintendo's usual sphere of influence and a small install base will do for Splatoon. Splatoon in particular looks set to pick up good critical acclaim, but sales will likely be woeful.

Mario Maker probably has a much higher base level in terms of sales thanks to adopting the Mario name, but the genre is much more niche, so it will also struggle sales-wise.

Would Mario Maker adopt the same genere as Minecraft?  Because Minecraft is the opposite of niche.

No, but you're certainly free to think it's a Minecraft in the making if you wish.

You're misunderstanding, I'm actually asking what genre Mario Maker is.  I couldn't care less if it sold 1 or 1 billion.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

I don't see much potential for either one, whatever happens on the marketing side.

Mario Maker, depending on the price, could achieve relatively decent sales.

As for Splatoon, I fully expect its numbers to disappoint. It strikes me as a tough sell.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Nintendo NEEDS to advertise Splatoon as much as they advertised MK8.......

But Nintendo will probably going to be Nintendo and fail.

Splatoon will probably get a good push on Cartoon Network and what not. Not as big as MK8 though obviously.

What if the game has Amiibo support where you can unlock Nintendo characters? Mario, Samus, Link, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Pitt, Marth, Fox, Pikachu, Yoshi, Villager could work.
