Minoru Arakawa would usually say to the disgruntled marketing team at NOA that marketing is just a big waste of money and point to the original Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong as proof of that. Two titles that didn't get any marketing, and ended up selling gangbusters.

I believe there are still people at Nintendo who share his ideas - which says that if a product holds enough quality and appeal, it will sell itself.

While I do believe that it should be the case, selling based on one owns merits, in real life it doesn't work that way.

Gamers are carpet bombed by marketing, a day only has 24h & gamers only have a certain budget for games, so as good as a game can be, it will only start selling based on reputation when it reaches a critical mass.

With the bloody competion that has become game selling, an effective (& generally costing) marketing is the best way to achieve that critical mass the quickest!

Nintendo needs to step up their game on that department & quick!!!
