Forums - Gaming - The Wii U is the only console to ever baffle me

I disagree.

Not every game should need online to be relevant. I'm sick of people thinking this. Which is funny, because I don't play singleplayer games!

It's 2015 and every multiplayer game - especially Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land - needs online.

Lol cause I got a date wrong on accident?

No, because you think upscaled Twilight Princess looks great while Zelda U looks ugly. I was just correcting you on the date.

Yeah I should've known it was 2011 because I remember their E3 2012 (75% which was Nintendo Land), I was just posting it cause the date the video was posted (June 2012) which led to my confusion.

Anyway, that demo looked great and Zelda Wii U looks so terrible. Zelda needs to be an epic sprawling adventure. Not a 3D cartoon. Even Nintendo in Melee (see here) admits Zelda should have "realistic" graphics.

Imagine Zelda with Dark Souls type art style but with Nintendo's colorful touch. *Drools* WOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!

The Souls series and spinoffs are now the new Zelda

OP, do you own a WiiU?

Always seems like we get threads like these from people who don't actually *own* a WiiU.

That's the problem - I have no desire to even own a Wii U (though I have played it).

The Wii is the only console I ever waited in line for during launch. I waited in line for multiple Wii games as well (Brawl and Galaxy). I even loved the GameCube and thought it was amazing. That's why the Wii U baffles me so much, because I have no desire to even buy it even if it was $100 (okay maybe I would to play Bayonetta 2).

ICYMI -- There's a list of generic reasons not to own any Nintendo console. They're more or less the same regardless of the system. Here they are:

-The Nintendo console looks weird

-The controller is weird

-There's not enough third party support

-It's not as popular as other consoles

-It's not as powerful as other consoles or there's some features the Nintendo console can't do that others can

-The games are a rehash of everything Nintendo's done before, but in a way I just don't like. Or -- nothing Nintendo's done recently has piqued my interest.

-Nintendo games are expensive

OP- Your thread basically reads like that. If this were 1998, you could say the same of the N64. If this were 2002, you could say the exact same things of the Gamecube. If this were 2006, you could say the same of the DS or Wii.

However, something weird typically happens when you actually own the Nintendo console in question. You just don't care anymore - or you just buy a second console/PC to supplement your gaming.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

This is wrong.

I will tell you why.

The N64 was different than the Wii U situation (albeit kinda similar). Why? Simple: it was powerful for one thing, but more importantly Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 were groundbreaking at the time. Then Nintendo let Rare do its own thing (mostly). For example, Rare gave us Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I doubt Nintendo of today would allow Rare to do that, they'd want them to focus on making sequels to Nintendo IPs all the time. I feel Retro Studios COULD become another Rare but Nintendo is holding them back. The Wii U could use another Goldeneye right about now but Nintendo has them working on another 2D Donkey Kong game, which rightfully flopped massively.

Nintendo had similar droughts with the N64 but Rare bailed them out.

The problem is the games aren't appealing. The N64 barely had any good games, but the games that were good were very good. The Wii also had many killer apps - Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, Brawl, etc. etc. Wii U doesn't have these.

Heck if Nintendo released Super Mario 64 2 and an epic Zelda game with OOT/TP graphics I would have been on board as with millions of others.

ey can do no wrong? What was their gameplan with the Wii U? Every decision they have made this gen has baffled me.

I feel like you don't really know what you're talking about for 80% of this.

- The Wii U is a far worse name than the Xbox One (which is a terrible name). Mainly because it caused a lot of confusion (which the One should have too but surprisingly didn't).

- The Wii U is at most barely more powerful than the PS3 and 360 which is unacceptable in 2012 and unacceptable to charge $349 for it

- There is no "vocal minority" in regard to the gamepad controller. It has been rejected by EVERYONE even Nintendo who have yet to make any good uses of it. Compare it to the Wiimote which Twilight Princess, Galaxy, and Wii Sports made it useful.

- Mario 3D World flopped

- The Zelda art style is bad. Twilight Princess is also the second best selling Zelda game behind Ocarina of Time... Skyward Sword sold TERRIBLY primarily due to its art style.

@Bold: There's no way you can possibly prove that, especially since it doesn't take much research for you to know it isn't true.  I wont argue that everyone embraces it, but I am quite sure that there's no way for you to prove that most people don't care about the idea of what you could do with it.
As for making good uses of it, there are some examples of good uses of the gamepad, and it's unfortunate that Nintendo hasn't fully implemented them yet, but I think it has more to do with Nintendo focusing on making as much money as they can on the system for now.  It would likely end up costing more money to experiment with it than to just simply pump out money makers.

@Mario flopping, I disagree.  You compare it to Galaxy and the original 3D Mario (Mario 64), but those are bad comparisons when you take the other factors into account.  Given the install base for the Wii U, it did pretty well.

@Zelda art style, there's really nothing you can show that proves that Skyward Sword sold fewer units due to its art style.  It would actually be more believable to say that Skyward Sword sold less due to it being launched near the end of the Wii's life (which there is some relation between software sales and the time of release, believe it or not), or that the motion controls turned people away from the game.  Twilight Princess also released on the Gamecube initially, and it sold terribly.  Your reasoning for why Skyward Sword sold as little as it did (which, objectively speaking, it did not sell "terribly") can be akin to saying that Twilight Princess for Gamecube sold very little was primarily because it is the Gamecube it sold on, and the Wii version sold as much as it did primarily due to the Wii having sold many hardware units.

Most people want a Wii U without the gamepad controller. There's like a new thread about it every week even here on VGChartz.

Yeah but Super Mario HD should have sold consoles. 3D World disappointed MANY people when it was revealed. An HD Super Mario 64 sequel would have caused the internet to shut down. Remember the Twilight Princess E3 reveal? Man that was amazing!

Twilight Princess sold terrible on the GC because it was a Wii game. Yeah, technically it was ported to the Wii but most people didn't even know TP came out for the GameCube (and Nintendo only kept it on the GC because it promised it for 2 years). Skyward Sword sold poorly because it had no appeal. If SS had TP graphics I bet you it would sell significantly better.

Wind Waker HD also flopped in comparison to Ocarina of Time 3D

Oh yeah I just thought of another thing that is annoying me. Nintendo has clearly bought exclusives before. Sony and Microsoft are doing it now kind of. However, Nintendo DID do it this gen and what did they buy?

Sonic the Hedgehog. Seriously, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, and Titanfall were ALL on the table and Nintendo chose Sonic?!?!?!?!? Not only that but Sega barely even cared and gave us Sonic Boom.

Tbf, none of those games were on the table to be exclusives easy for Nintendo. Plus, they already have Yokai and MH in japan which are big games there. At least give them some credit, not everything is terrible.
