Forums - Sony - Did Sony Blow it w/ Uncharted?

Uncharted wasn't a blockbuster because it's hard to sell a realistic spelunking/tombraiding adventure to a mass market, after the stigma it carries from the Tomb Raider series. To cut even further, the reviews as a whole weren't blockbuster-esque, nor was the fanbase at the time of launch, huge. This isn't a universally appealing game, and I think it did well, considering it all.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

It had decent amounts of ads, but nothing too much.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

In the UK, it was heavily advertised. Not only did I see TV ads before the game released and after it was released, and I remember seeing numerous press adverts over 2/3 pages one after another advertising it as well.

Also remember seeing a cinema advert for the game, which was advertised alongside Assassins Creed and COD4 before a film I saw.

So I reckon it got loads of coverage. Although if the game came out a bit later, I reckon it would have sold a hell of alot more seeing as there are more PS3's and people tend to buy brand new games when the buy a brand new PS3.

I don't think they blew it, it's just a game can only sell so much.

Besides, 1.3 million is a fantastic number. It means a good game probably made money and there will be another (hopefully) good game by those people.

If you are talking about a sales vs cost, one of the lead producers was on the 1up yours podcast during GDC and she said they were "in the black" and that a sequel was lined up. Obviously, Sony and the dev team all wished they had Halo's numbers but it still made a profit with what saies it has. How big of a profit is uncertain but its still there.

It got good coverage. Although it might just be my taste but I felt the ads themselves were lacking - they really didn't sell the game well IMHO. The ones I saw were miss-mashes of gameplay footage with little feel for the games overall style.

I think they should have sold it as an Indy type film except you get to do the punching, leaping and shooting.

I did think it has less build on the internet though - when I think how early the hype started for GOW on 360, with articles on the 'Destroyed Beauty' theme etc. I do wonder whether Uncharted could have hit a lot harder with the kind of AAA build behind it. Mind you it would probably have needed some sweet MP to get anywhere near GOW levels of sales no matter what advertising it had.

Still, sales on console base for PS3 are good for a new IP and I think Uncharted will continue to show legs for a while yet.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Uncharted was advertised well enough. I'm not sure if it was advertised more than Heavenly Sword though, but it wasn't an unknown game. I think many just may have passed because they weren't that interested.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
