Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft needs to pull a Gears of War with Sunset Overdrive

So? What do you think?

YES! This game was so fun! 51 36.17%

No! Fuck that! The game sucked! 44 31.21%

Multiplat for the sequel now! 44 31.21%

Total:139

When I say "pull a Gears of War", I mean do what Microsoft did the majority of the first half of last gen which was pay for publishing exclusivity rights to new IP's that could otherwise grow elsewhere. This is how they kept Gears away from Sony. This could be their second tier TPS behind Gears of War where gamers can just lay back and have fun. A nice 2016 E3 announcement for the sequel at the presser should seal the deal.

If they let Sony get their hands on this game that is one growing new IP that could gain ground in the new gen they lost extra incentive. Its fine that it starts off slow, but so did Uncharted last gen and look at where it is today. Time reveals all, so I think they should just be smart about this. I'm confident in Sony actually being able to make their own games, but MS at their best are always good at finding developers to publish for them and this is one of those games that they do not want to miss out on.  While Insomniac makes Ratchet for Sony, they could be making Sunset for MS.

SO is not what Gears of Wars was. Not even close. No sense in MS worrying about it.

Btw Uncharted 1 sold nearly 5 million

SO sold 3/4ths of 1 million

Let them keep Sunset Overdrive.

Read the first sentence again, bro. Its not about being what Gears was, but rather about the significance of the deal made for Gears of Wars exclusivity. The exclusive publishing contract since Insomniac wants to keep the IP.

BTW...Uncharted didnt sell 5 million out of the gate. It took time for it to reach those sales.

Never going to happen. GoW generate sales many times more than that of SO and it still took them years to buy the IP.

Isn't the whole reason they made Sunset Overdrive exclusive to the XBO so that wouldn't happen?

Microsoft would not have needed to buy the IP for Gears if Epic would've continued to make the title for them. They are dependent upon third party exclusive support and they'll pay top dollar for it as you've seen. Once again, as you saw....since Epic didn't want to continue with Gears they bought the whole franchise and some key people from the team, plus the hiring laid off members of Sony Santa Monica and Irrational Games to work on Gears.

BTW if you read what I wrote, this is about potential, not about being a runaway hit. I used Uncharted as an example because when it first came out it was a sleeper. It wasnt until Uncharted 2 that the sales for one started to get a boost.

Sunset Overdrive 2 will not be a console seller like Gears of Wars was, Gears of War was the only reason I bought a 360. MS should be worried more about Titanfall which IS a console seller. But I am pretty sure they have already lost that fight.

Insomniac wanted to focus on one publisher to let the IP hit the ground running. They pitched the idea to many developers. Microsoft was a key candidate because they dont care if they own the game as long as they can fill their ranks with it. I believe they tried with both Sony and Activision before they went to Microsoft and those fell through. After seeing what Sunset has become now, I am sure they would welcome Insomniac with open arms for a multiplat. Sony made a lot of mistakes with games like Titanfall as well and we all know thats going multiplat.

Why, the game is not nearly as popular as Gears was. Gears was a huge selling blockbuster, SO is more niche. Has it even sold a million copies yet?
