Forums - Gaming - How do you play Dragon Age Inquisition?

First playthrough with an Elf Warrior/Champion/Sword&Shield at normal difficulty(95hrs+), then playing now with a Human Rogue/Dual Blades and making him a Tempest at nightmare difficulty(16hrs+ in) and I'm now at Skyhold(finally!), also I'm playing with a contoller(PS3). Playing on PC.

Nintendo Switch FC: SW-6340-7643-4233 aka Renji

Steam: Lee Roid

Played it twice, first a Knight Enchaner, doest do amazing damage, but VERY hard to kill, huge survivability.

Second time I played as a Tempest Rogue, and it was AWESOME (on nightmare) I have a few videos of dragon kills and stuff here

But they can do immense damage, I was an Archer, but reckon it could work with daggers as well.

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

Waiting for it to go on sale again at the Origin store. But, I am glad that you brought this up, as I had been thinking of how to start the game and which way to go the first time through.

I hope that many people respond to this thread.

It is near the end of the end....

A rogue with an assassin specialization ...

Rouge/assassin, but as I'm "only" 26 hours in, I literally just unlocked that tree, so haven't invested any points yet.

So I use a bow and stealth my way to a good vantage point and just shoot people a lot

Blackwall uses sword and shield. I've tried to focus his skills on defence and taunting. Don't know what he offers more than Cassandra, but she's just a bit annoying and he has a nice beard.

Iron Bull goes in and hits everything, he's just there to do as much damage as possible

Dorian is there to flirt and occassionally send some spells around. I'm not sure if he's necessarily the best mage, but I like his fire and lightning spells. I still haven't gone to unlock Viv and I was never convinced by Solas

I haven't experimented with my party that much. Cole and Sera haven't seen the field at all and Viv is still somewhere in the countryside. It's just too much of a bore to keep them all well equiped

Dragons still do terrify me though. I'm level 12, so I guess I shouldn't be too far away from taking them on. But I am curious what I should be spending my money on. I tend to get nice progression of armour and weapons through looting. I have also picked up a fair few designs to craft add on items, which I have been sticking on. I haven't had much trouble with these methods, but I'm only playing on normal and playing quite thoroughly, so am appropriately levelled

This game is much deeper than the last DA, so you'll be fine and have many choices at your disposal. You'll have many characters to switch around as well depending on how you customize their skill trees. Attribute points are no longer customizable, they level up with you; however, much like the last DA you can use your clothing and accessories as a buff for your weapons and clothes. You also can increase the attire of everyone (You just cannot upgrade bianca very much for varric so he'll probably become dead weight if you rely on an archer rogue). A good replacement for Varric this time around is Sera. I just remember that in DA 2 I replaced him with Sebastian, so yeah...i feel no shame any longer (LOL).  Anyway, once again, you'll be fine. A new addition to this game is the War Table, which maps out your battlefield of the war and each battle it will take to win the war by gaining as much help and resources as possible. From there you'll have to make important decisions with the advise of three of your inquisition members and each one will be crafted to their bias. One will be diplomatic, the other will be rogue and the other will be for the good of the military.

Also, if you haven't played DA before, the game will direct you to the EA website so you can customize the storyline tapestry so the fallout from the customized games can affect the world that you're in.

Im playing on nightmare, im a archer assassin, i play with a tank (blackwall is best cause he gets a immume to damage spell later on) and iron bull 2hander and viviane witch is specialized into barriers (is it just me or do mages do crap damage? i just use them for barries at this point...)

With a controller?

Yeah, why? Thought only a mouse and keyboard could control the battlefield properly?

I want to try controller because I don't like keyboard and mouse for this game.

Unlike games like Diablo, the character won't go to where you point and click. You have to move by combining the WASD keys with the mouse. This isn't a problem in itself, but it gets frustrating for me becauae of the loot system. You'll spend so much time picking up loot in this game. But even if you're standing RIGHT next to the loot and click on it, your character won't pick it up and you have to move a few pixels closer and try again. And since using the keyboard to move doesnt initiate small and precise movements, but rather quick and clumsy ones (if youre facing one way and press the opposite direction on the keyboard, the character will first move FORWARD, then stop and do a 180 turn), it feels annoying a lot of the times. I wish the character woukd move automatically to the loot if I click on it. Or give me the option to instruct my allies to pick it up. With a controller you dont have to target the loot. You can just walk over it while mashing the pickup button. Abd precise movements are easier with an analog stick.

Also, I don't like having to use so many hotkeys for combat. There are 8 hotkeys for skills that you put on buttons 1-8, and that doesnt feel intuitive for me, and if I have my fingers on 1 and 2, but need to quickly press 6, I often miss and hit 5 or 7 instead unless I take my eye off the screen and look down. You can click on them with the mouse too, but since mouse clicking is how you do regular attacks, thats usually not affective.

with a controller however you have the hotkeys on your main 4 buttons, and switch between sets of hotkeys with the shoulder button. I like that idea a lot more than using so many hotkeys on pc. Its fine in games like diablo for example where youre limited to 4 hotkeys for skills. But 8 is just too much for me @_@

I've been trying to connect a controller to the game, with no luck so far when trying one of my controllers that works with other games. A few buttons worked, but not the analog stick or the d-pad. So I couldn't even change it back to Keyboard under options again, nor even close the game properly. Had to force shutdown the game. I'll try my PS2 or PS3 controller next with an adaptor.

PC Master Race, making gaming so easy! @_@

Console version of the game replaces hotkeys with quick inventory wheels on the LB and the Menu screen button on the Xbox One. I find that its easier with the freeze frame strategy mode to place your characters and simply choose from your hotkey commands on what they should do in that instant. I've combo attacked enemies to death. I can see the allure of a mouse and keyboard, but i've learned how to master a controller based strategy relatively quickly. Perhaps if I was playing a game like Starcraft i'd prefer the mouse and keyboard, but Dragon Age? nahhhhhh lol. Heh

WHAT!? Blackwall has damage immunity!? OMG!

I stay in the hinterlands until lv 8 and sink 17 hours into it...Seriously, the OCD was real, I had to complete and explore as many places/quests as I could. Ended up with like 40 something power after finally leaving.
