Wii Sports, Minecraft & World of Warcraft. Not merely just just games anymore but cultural phenomenon.

Wii Sports

Wii Sports - on consoles. Plus WoW, Minecraft, Farmville and Angry Birds - as idiotic as those choices sound, those are the games that defined last 10 or so years, each in its own way.

Any reason why anyone is voting for Super Mario Galaxy?

Its really baffling to see so many people say the last of us. The game has been out for just a year and a half, if it indeed did revolutionize the industry the effect we have seen so far is minimal, reality is, development studios that were effected or inspired by TLoU still didnt have enough time to release their games since the games launch. There hasnt been enough time to see its effect yet. So people saying the last of us is pretty odd to me

I would say halo CE, it created the path for FPS to come to consoles in a huge way, and it gave birth to the xbox brand, without it the xbox brand would cease to exist now.

Second comes wii sports, its effect however was just for one generation, but it sure had a big impact because of it.

The comes uncharted 2, which has effected not only third person shooters but most action and story driven games. It gave birth to technical marvels that spawned some innovation in level desgin. and become the golden standard in quality that other devs went out to match

Tho the way Demons Souls changed gaming for me was something special.

All of that stuff probably is better credited to L.A Noire which pionered the technology used to give human beings such lifelike expressions.  And there are plenty of games that push the liveliness of their worlds; Bioshock Infinite being an obvious example that does most of what you said.  As for storytelling, it's not doing much new as it is just a (mostly) linear storyline which isn't particularly new.  And that's entirely, 100% fine.  Being the best at an established thing is better than being OK at something new.  The storytelling is well done, but it more emulates a movie than explore the possibilities that interactive media bring.

L.A Noire doesn't even come close and neither does Bioshock Infinite. They're infantile compared to TLOU. I can't explain it. Either you get it or you don't. It's a dangerous area of debate and I don't really want to express it frankly. It's best to go out there and read what others have said about what makes it great so you don't take it too personally.

Try these for starters:

The question of something being revolutionary is not one of quality; in fact, the revolutionary ones usually are overshadowed by their successors who do it better.  TLOU can be better than what came before without being noticeably different in a way that is revolutionary.  The problem here is that the very word revolutionary has become synonymous with "better" and therefore everyone slaps it on the game they like the most.  The stuff you are talking about is great, but they are simply advancements of what has already been done by other games, not revolutionary in the actual sense of the word.  It has better writing, better animations, better mechanics, etc, but not revolutionary.

I mean, that first video is really just discussing the writing and the execution of such, a philosophical interpretive exercise that I am very familiar with as it is in my area of actual study.  But that still has little to do with revolutionary game development; doesn't even represent qualities accomplishable only in the interactive media that is video games.

It's exceptional at doing what has been done, not doing something inherently new.  You love TLOU, I get that, but such gnostic praise as "you get it or you don't" like there's some inexpressible special essence that makes it superior to everything does a disservice to what it actually is by setting standards too high in the minds of those listening.

None. That game is still to come. It will be something that brings innovation to the games industry the same way Mario 64 and Ocarina of time brought 3D into excellence.

Last of Us? Can anyone posting it please list all the games that have come out clearly heavily influenced by Last of Us? Or please explain the design shifts and mechanics boom that exploded because of LoU?

Oh wait you can't because it' been out for like 18 months or something LOL. Even if it had ssomething massively innovative, it's too early to call it.

The correct answers imho are Halo and Wii Sports.

Metroid Prime.
