Forums - Gaming - Which console exclusive of this century is the most revolutionary game?

?

Halo: CE 170 25.07%

God Of War 46 6.78%

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune 97 14.31%

Gears Of War 29 4.28%

Demon's Souls 70 10.32%

Super Mario Galaxy 211 31.12%

Super Smash Bros Melee 55 8.11%

Total:678

As fun and unique as Super Mario Galaxy is, I can't really see how it has been revolutionary in any way. I choose Halo CE.

Uncharted and Gears would be good choices if only one of them existed.

No TLOU, no vote.

TLOU learned from Uncharted and then reinspired Uncharted 4's system.

This thread would be better without the 'console exclusive' limitation.

Then it would have been too easy.

It is as far as the platforming genre was in its day. Animal Crossing and Wii Sports were not revolutionary, but rather innovative. Revolutions change the way the industry makes games within a small amount of time.

IE: Super Mario 64 revolutionized open world gaming prompting other games to follow.  Before that open world games already existed on PC. GTA 3 revolutionized what Super Mario 64 revolutionized a generation later.

Does this suffice for example? No one is following Wii Sports or Animal Crossing.

GTA 3 following this logic, since almost everything nowadays try to copy its openworld.

TLOUS does not come even close to that.

Going down the "but X did it earlier", wouldn't Driver 2 or Urban Chaos be the revolutionary games rather than GTA 3? ;)

This people are being crazy, if we go that route Pong was the only revolutionary game.

I like how people are conveniently ignoring the second option in the poll as if it doesn't exist or it didn't inspire many games or vastly improve narrative in games. Its being treated as a third-rate exclusive, which very clearly PS fans in this site don't care about.

I say Super Smash Melee. no other game has perfected the party-fighting genre like that one. the huge number of changeable fighting options, items, game modes, characters. it's just like a perfect game

it says a lot that tons of conventions and places still host large tournaments for the games and that generally people replay it with friends very commonly.

I understand those saying Mario Galaxy though, mega creative mindset in terms of platforming and Mario in that game

I also might throw Fallout 3 out there in terms of combination of FPS and RPG

very effective game that definitely has spurred a lot of copy-cat attempts and to some degree revitalized the genre. the VATS system, style of the game, open world, characters, gameplay all are quite unique

oooo great pick. one of the best RPG's of all time

I definitely agree with this, you see a lot of attempts at sort of recreating it but the perfect combination of dialogue options, quests, story are pretty unmatchable compared to that

I hope they come out with a sequel (Sith Lords was okay but even that was so long ago!) that is of similar quality. I would literally throw a party if it happened

Uncharted is definitely the winner here. Games are starting to use narritive and look how many games have been taking bits and pieces from it. Seemless cinematic storylines with great gameplay are a pedigree seldom seen before Uncharted. Uncharted took everything we already had before it and combined it into a seemless package which is revolutionary.

Linear, narrative driven games existed on consoles long before Uncharted. And you can even look at Tomb Raider Anniversary in the same genre to see that the move to more linear, cinematic games began even before Uncharted came out. You might consider Uncharted to be the best series to latch onto this movement, but it didn't create that movement.

Not saying narritive driven and linear games have not existed (that would be implying that i'm saying its innovative...not revolutionary. Its not innovative at all.), but Uncharteds style has of camera cinematics putting them into games has been copied before by Sony and other companies. The standard that it set for the total package of gaming was revolutionary. The gameplay has been copied as well. Gears of War and Uncharted took the same ideas and ran with it in two opposite directions. The amount of games that have come out since the two of them because popular and immitating the two is higher in Uncharteds favor. Uncharted and Gears of War both learned from the great and lesser known TPS games of the past which were Winback and Killswitch for cover fire. They both also give credit to Resident Evil four for the over the shoulder shooting.

Uncharted as a whole package was an experience NO ONE was doing before it came out, which is why games like the Last of Us, Tomb Raider, Stars 1313, The Order, Assassins Creed V, all took queues in some respect from immersion to gameplay from cinematics. 343 Industries has even started to take note of the importance of cinematics in shaping a story.

Shadow of Mordor and batman arkham pushed the evelope that Assassins Creed revolutionized with open world.

Hyperbole galore. The "standard for the total package of gaming" was revolutionary? lol, ok.

Cinematics, dramatic camera angles... you really should try the couple of Tomb Raiders before Drake's Fortune :)

Even God Of War had cinematics and it released befoe Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Damn people on this site have completely forgotten about that game or choose to ignore it.
