@windbane
Well PSX outsold N64, but it had better multiplayer experience and the most awesome one player games:
TLoZ: OoT (best game ever made)
Mario 64 (The game that made a revolution in 3D gaming)
Goldeneye, Smash bros, Mario Party (1,2,3), Diddy kong racing, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox,Conker Bad Fur day, Resident Evil 2, Pilot Wings, Star Wars Roque Squadron, and many more.

WHA????? I was not expecting that... what a waste of my time! Holy crap... what a bad list... I was like... It's gotta be the SNES... then boom the SNES isn't even close... so I'm like it's gotta be the DS... then boom same thing... then I'm like... Wii??? and Boom... ?
Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.
The Game Daily list -- and about half the lists on here by posters -- ignore anything pre-NES.
You have to list the Atari 2600 on it. A lifespan of over a dozen years and 40M units. It began competing against Pong and ended against the Genesis. And people still make "homebrew" games for it.
I am partial to the Intellivision. It also has extreme longevity. But its special place is licenced titles. It had MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NASL (now defunct soccer league), PGA, PBA, US Ski Team, even US Chess Federation and APBA Backgammon. It also had the first controller with 16 directions and 16 buttons -- sounds like today's units.
Most of the games on the list are good. But leading with something from this genreation -- which may be the lowest selling unit of this generation when it is all said and done -- is not wise. (A similar sales-realted arguement can be made for dropping the GameCube from the list).

I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
The worst list ever
All know the best console in history is SNES no discussion.
Xbox number 1...see...not everyone in this world is a microsoft hating - sony butt kissing - nintendo loving freak like most people here.
Seriously tho, how did xbox get number 1? Top 5 maybe...Dreamcast should be number 1.
That list is a fake one. It's been debunked already. Here is the real one:
1. SNES
2. PS2
3. Wii
4. NES
5. NDS
6. Gameboy
7. N64
8. PS1
9. Genesis
10. Atari 2600
Historically speaking hardware difficulties have been the norm rather then the rarity. Most consoles have had hardware issues. You really don't want to go down that road as a reason to like or dislike a console on the list. Many of those great consoles listed besides the 360 had serious technical flaws.
My old NES was a wonderful example. I had a whole slew of rituals required to make it operate properly. Today its the butter knife tomorrow its fisting the cartridge in. By all means do not forget to blow it out. My Genesis was no better according to Sega it was a safety hazard, because the power cord stripped and exposed the wiring. I was calling to replace that by the way. They told me to take a hike and buy a new one. Playstations one word for you breakable.
We haven't even touched the controllers yet. The old NES had a controller that was nothing less then a torture device, the 64 controller was gender confused, and the wii mote is an accident waiting to happen. I have never seen a controller injure so many people. Thats ignoring the real crime with that controller battery only. You can't even get a corded version.
Most consoles have had hardware difficulties only rose colored glasses can cover that up. I actually have rather fond memories of my old faulty hardware it was almost like a badge of honor. Having to repair it or go through some ritual to make it actually work. I actually replaced my Genesis power cord with the power supply for a cordless drill. A show of hands who here had to pry a button back out of its socket.
Give it a break guys consoles have been notoriously shoddy. You make that your dominant criteria and a whole lot of consoles have to get out of the pool. The only console I consider to have had no technical flaws was my old 64, and that console was fool proof, and damn near indestructible. The thing literally had armor.
Anyone see the Mind of Mencia episode where he pulled one out for mini Gallagher to take a sledge to it. One hit did it for everything else not for the 64 it shrugged it off he had to take four good whacks at it with a sledge to bust the thing. I have actually seen someone drop a 64 from five feet up onto concrete pick it up dust it off and go play on it. Do that with a modern console, and you might as well go straight into mourning.
Microsoft isn't exceptional with their hardware difficulties. For all we know other consoles had equal failure rates. I remember hearing of it when I was younger. Some poor guy at school had his NES, Playstation, or Genesis break. You know what they did they just went and got another one. Nobody was plussed by the experience we just expected things like that to happen.

Nobody is going to argue that the Xbox 360 is not severely lacking in several genres (platformers for example) but so are some of the other consoles on that list. For example the N64 is lacking in Sports, WRPGs, JRPGs, Racing Sims, and Shooters.
I also don't think it deserves to be number one but if in the next 3 or 4 years it's able to get some fantastic platfomers (hopefully one of which will be Banjo Kazooie 3), some major JRPGs and MMORPGs (maybe Square Enix's Rapture MMORPG might be amazing), and many other huge titles it has a decent chance of reaching it.
