Mario did that in just one console!". Being heavily bundled, yes. GTA reached this insane number in little over a year, that's absolutely crazy. And only a FRACTION of those sales come from that PS3 bundle. And A LOT of those sales were full-price. Wii Sports doesn't look that impressive in comparison really. |
The thing is that none of this games sold those amazing numbers on its own. And when I say "on its own" I mean without any kind of help, in the hardest situation possible: Game not bundled, not digital sales, not multiplat or cross-gen, not counting other versions...
-Super Mario Bros sold 40m units on one console through heavy bundling, plus other versions on handhelds, reskins and digital after the NES.
-Tetris is in almost EVERY DIGITAL DEVICE known to man. Also, it's usually cheap as hell. Same goes to Snake.
-Wii Sports sold more than 80 million units by becoming the most bundled game ever. But it was only on one platform, one version and has zero digital sales.
-GTA V is a big multiplat, selling almost 20 m on each of last gen consoles, a couple of millions on this gen versions, and it will be avaible on PC soon. It's been bundled, but not that much. It has digital sales, but the core of the sales are retail.
-Angry Birds has dozens of versions, it comes with a lot of mobile and tablet devices (at least a demo or a free trial), and is cheap to buy.
None of this games have technicaly sold "on their own". I guess it depends of personal opinion which condition is more relevant to sales.
