Forums - Sales Discussion - GTA V is the best selling Retail game of all time!

Yeah no. Like said, If you're going to include GTAV's next-gen ports you're going to have to sum up all the ports of Super Mario Bros as well. Not only does it then still lose, but the latter's sales are also very incomplete. Not to mention such a thing as Wii Sports exists, and Tetris with it's billion ports and whatever else.

EDIT: Kresnik's awesome title change lol .

GTAV is not the best selling game of all time, but it's certainly up there!

I wonder if "The Playroom" will end up with bigger "sales" than Wii Sports, as it comes with every PS4.

But it's digital!

Oh, Minecraft and Tetris are too?

But hey, it's a free game!

Oh, Wii Sports was too?

you forgot "it's just a tech demo"

Best-selling retail, non-heavily bundled game ever, yes.

It seems a lot of people on the thread are downplaying GTA5. "Five different platforms? Mario did that in just one console!". Being heavily bundled, yes. GTA reached this insane number in little over a year, that's absolutely crazy. And only a FRACTION of those sales come from that PS3 bundle. And A LOT of those sales were full-price.

Wii Sports doesn't look that impressive in comparison really.

Yeah adding the PS4 and XBO version weakened the argument lol

5 consoles in a little over a year?

How about 1 console in 5 years?

2006 2,565,015 N/A 2,565,015
2007 14,794,664 476.8% 17,359,679
2008 21,842,013 47.6% 39,201,692
2009 18,788,738 -14.0% 57,990,430
2010 15,069,016 -19.8% 73,059,446

Even in 4 years Wii Sports wins. I still think SMB is the real King, but GTA 5 really isn't RIGHT NOW.

New title is awesome.

The thing is that none of this games sold those amazing numbers on its own. And when I say "on its own" I mean without any kind of help, in the hardest situation possible: Game not bundled, not digital sales, not multiplat or cross-gen, not counting other versions...

-Super Mario Bros sold 40m units on one console through heavy bundling, plus other versions on handhelds, reskins and digital after the NES.

-Tetris is in almost EVERY DIGITAL DEVICE known to man. Also, it's usually cheap as hell. Same goes to Snake.

-Wii Sports sold more than 80 million units by becoming the most bundled game ever. But it was only on one platform, one version and has zero digital sales.

-GTA V is a big multiplat, selling almost 20 m on each of last gen consoles, a couple of millions on this gen versions, and it will be avaible on PC soon. It's been bundled, but not that much. It has digital sales, but the core of the sales are retail.

-Angry Birds has dozens of versions, it comes with a lot of mobile and tablet devices (at least a demo or a free trial), and is cheap to buy.

None of this games have technicaly sold "on their own". I guess it depends of personal opinion which condition is more relevant to sales.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Not the best selling, but still a great accomplishment.
