Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Confirms New Console, Evidently Powered by AMD

Haven't Sony and MS been working on their next consoles too? I don't see how this surprising news.

I don't think most would agree that 4 years is plenty for a home console though, seeing as it's below the norm, and Xbox was the only one to my recollection that recieved such a short lifespan, without being called a complete failure. As for lack of Wii's support towards the end, that had a lot to do with it's lack of third party support. Same problem several other Nintendo home consoles had/have. PlayStation 2 recieved it's last game as late as last year actually, and they were two third party games. (EA and Konami.)
Regarding New 3DS, it's quite a different scenario though, in that we're not required to purchase it in order to play all future games. I'll still be able to play Majora's Mask on my current 3DS XL, as well as the majority of the upcoming games. At this point in time, we only know of one game that will require the New 3DS I think, and it seems like they will be in the vast minority at this point. Also, many people got over it by simply not buying it. That's not an option you get if it comes to an actual successor to a console though, and you want to play all the upcoming games.

However, this thing about the successor to Wii U sharing games with the Wii U is news to me. From what I read, the rumor is that the games would be shared between the successor of the Wii U, and it's portable version, the successor to the 3DS.
If that's the case, then it should be fine. But then I'm not sure how the Wii U will handle the game's graphical standards?

I was talking specifically about first party support with regards to the Wii. 4 years absolutely is plenty of time. The original Xbox is another prime example, and that didn't even have BC.

People don't have to get the Wii U successor at launch, just like with the N3DS. I'm basing the idea of the Wii U and it's successor sharing a library completely off the fact that Nintendo is using the Wii U's achitesture as a foundation for that very same shared platform between the next handheld and console. In the very same way that games will be scaled down for the handheld counterpart, they can be scaled down for the Wii U, which is the very foundation from which those games would be running. I'd wager that most new games simply won't be pushing the newest console enough to be impossible to scale down to the Wii U. Think of all the games whe Wii U has now. Most of them would be perfectly functional on the Wii, with obvious visual downgrades. Only some of the monumental block busters would be truly exclusive, which is a good thing. You need to sell the new console with something.

Let's see how the system turns out to be.

I just want to see them go to 4K before anyone else. Don't come out 3 years after the PS4 with 15% more power than a PS4 and think you will be able to sell a ton of systems. You won't. It will be the Wii U all over again. Fans deserve better.
A 2017 May launch with 4k badassery would get Nintendo pumping again.

2017 is way to early for 4k...  and they would be 10 years ahead...   and directly from beeing the weakest in the last sub hd generation to the front of the new 4k generation is a big big leap...

Lol at all these people who keep saying "No new Nintendo console/handheld before 2017-2018". I'm not sure on which planet you guys are living on, but Nintendo hardware sales are at historical lows. And it's only going to go DOWNWARDS from this point moving forward. How can Nintendo even afford to wait another 3 years on 2 systems that are bombing in the west currently? And yes, 3DS is doing very poorly in the west. It's barely going to end up reaching N64 numbers in the US (which is very bad for a Nintendo handheld, it's about HALF of what the WORST SELLING Nintendo handheld sold in the US) and it's doing about equally poorly in Europe for a Nintendo handheld. As for wiiU, I don't even need to explain why it's a bomb worldwide.

Whats your opinion on the Vita

It's selling like a dead consoles pretty much WW. There probably won't be a successor to it. However, Sony isn't in any kind of rush to replace it or to bring out something new because they have hundreds of products unlike Nintendo where they have their 2 main products (wii u and 3ds).

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Next question is if they'll give it a shitty name.

If  game cube can survived in 6th gen era, why not with Wii U.  If they releasing a new hardware on 2016 it will be a normal console with just more powerful then PS4 and Xbox One, and they will competing with all 2 giants company that already sit comfortably on the market. They can release a fusion console and tablet but the graphic will be the same with Wii U , if they want to make a tablet more powerful then a Wii U,  the tablet will be to big to carry and consume a lot of battery.

So 2017 or 2018 is a perfect time for them to strike back with casual design system (Tablet ) but powerful enough to compete with both PS brand and Xbox brand on graphic department , so they can gain more support from third party publisher.

WiiU is tracking way below GC sales. And I highly doubt that they're going to bet once again on another tablet when wiiU was such a huge commercial failure.

EDIT: I actually agree that wiiU's successor will launch in 2017. But there's no way that we won't see a new Nintendo handheld on the market before 2016.

You are keep quoting the same thing....Nintendo is not going to abandon the wii u anytime soon .....you fail to realize hardware sales does not matter as much ...it's the software that matters and accessories(amibos, merchandise etc) in which where the most money is made not hardware ...nintendo is making a lot of money off their first party software in which almost always sell in the millions or tens of millions ....Nintendo does not put much thought in market share because their first party software sells well..... Xbox and Sony care about market share because their first party doesn't sell as well as Nintendos and they rely more on third party to bring in revenue ...so the more consoles on the market the more 3rd party sells makes them a profit....what I'm trying to basically say hardware sells does not equate to software sales /merchandise ....why do you think Sony and Xbox sell their consoles at a loss because they feel they can make it back in software and xbox live or psn subscriptions etc ...reality is the hardware sells plays a small part in revenue for Sony ,nintendo or Microsoft ..just saying ....that is why as long as nintendo software sells well they will not abandon the wii u and maximize their profits  no matter how low ther console sales are

Huuh what? Hardware AND sofware sales are at all time lows. And read again, I said that wiiU's successor will probably launch in 2017. It's their new handheld that will definetly be out in 2016.

I think this is kind obvious, isn´t it? They always start working on the next console as soon as they launch a new one.

Anyway, it think it will not be so soon..... maybe something for 2017 or 2018

Well yeah that is pretty obvious, of course they're working on new hardware. So is everyone else.

Some people that make articles like these seem to think developing new hardware only takes like two weeks and those engineers are just picking their noses for the rest of the generation. They're working on it since before the last system (WiiU/3DS in this case) ever hit the shelves! In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they've already have some ideas that came up during development for the next console that they shelved for the console after that.

probably their next handheld.

If they're going with AMD it's no handheld.

Do not be so hasty vivster!

If AMD brings an APU for a handheld that will be a really really big deal for them since currently AMD and mobile are words that don't appear in the same sentence very often. In 2 years they migh be ready with an APU on 14nm. Still I can't see it as of now.
