Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Is More Important Than It Should Be

NPD is great, reliable sales numbers are awesome considering the one thing that brought all of us to this site (regardless of whether it's why we still come) is sales.

But why is NPD such a massive thing? People on both side either rejoicing or in denial about Xbox One winning NPD November. NPD is very interesting and gives you an idea of the mindset of the North American buyer but that's about it. When it comes to sales on a meaningful level all 3 current gen consoles are WORLDWIDE consoles, you can pick and chose regions all you like but no one makes a massive fuss of 3DS being best selling in Japan because it's a worldwide machine.

I don't know if it's just me but saying "well the PS4 IS still easily winning worldwide" sounds like damage control when surely it should be the other way around where the statement of "well we won in x region" should be damage control..

Thoughts?

Apologies in advance as I wrote this on my phone.

The US is the biggest market right now for video games.

Won bet with t3mporary_126 - I correctly predicted that the Wii U's LTD at the end of 2014 would be closer to 9 million than 10 million. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6673287

Npd is important cause US is one of the biggest gaming markets out there... Plus, yes, Worldwide is important but we have no reliable sources for the entire EU and Japan is very handheld heavy so their console sales aren't really yaying anything

With Japan becoming a non-factor for home consoles, the US market is a lot more important than in the 7th gen. I do agree that "we won region X" is more damage control sounding than "we still won worldwide" though.

I guess its primarily due to the fact that The US is by far the biggest market and really where things get done. Decisions made by third parties be it exclusives or marketing rights are swayed by the larger markets. In places like europe where consoles are mainly bought for annual releases like fifa, the US has a wider range of annual releases for the masses ( COD, AC, Madden, NBA 2k, NFL) and just greater attach rates generally than other regions

This is a #fact

Praise the One.

US is the biggest gaming market. Its also the most interesting cause both the PS4 and X1 have a chance to be first place there.

USA and Europe is all that matters. Xbox won USA so bottles deserved to be popped.

The US is the biggest gaming market and most of the users here are from the US. So it makes sense that they would care about NPD since it's on their home turf. Also, we already know that the console sales positions won't change for the rest of the generation, so the sales for US and UK are the only interesting battle left.
