Forums - Sony - I'm convinced it's impossible to deliver impressive graphics today

They're right though. The game is nothing special and it's amazing anyone thinks it is. At this point I feel as if it is a Naughty Dog effect. The moment they release a game it is met with graphical praise. Regardless if it actually deserves it or not.

The foliage looks great.

I completely agree and one day (soon hopefully) graphics analysis will be a thing of the past. Once we reach a situation in which the developer can express the mood and accuracy of animation they require then it will move to the next and most important stage. If we compare it to film, we are still in the black and white, silent move era. A few developers have moved us further, like ND with TLOU, but largely speaking the gaming industry is still a 'child's toy'. When we start talking about story, acting, performances, script and dialogue, THEN we can comfortably claim the gaming industry has grown up.

The PS5 Exists.

Graphics reached a point where they're good enough last gen (see Beyond Two Souls). It's like movie special effects. We will continue to be impressed but never blown away.

I agree with everyone who says it looks like a higher res version of Uncharted 3. The game looked amazing, but the reveal was really disappointing to me because I was expecting something more than a higher resolution PS3 game.

The Order says otherwise

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

It's going to be a long time before we aren't assessing the graphics of games. We have multiple after-effects placed on games to account for the simple fact that we don't have the sheer processing power to naturally render scenes which we consider aesthetically appealing.

A point when we get close is when games are running natively in 4k resolution, so effects like SSAA and other anti-aliasing effects aren't relevant anymore. Then, you have shadow and lighting effects like ambient occlusion to consider. The computer of system you're running will have to calculate the light paths in real-time, as opposed to methods of ambient occlusion like SSAO. Lastly, there's always the issue of ever increasing the clip planes of games so that LOD's become increasingly irrelevant as well.

And even then, you'll still have aesthetic choices for games largely determining whether a game looks good. Crysis 3 looks great, but so does Bioshock Infinite. They both look great for completely different reasons.

In short, we'll always be assessing a game's looks, but eventually the technical jargon won't really be important because we'll have hit the upper bound for what the human eye can perceive with regard to detail.

It's just a matter of diminishing returns. I'm not going to sit here and argue that Uncharted 4 doesn't look great (it does), but is the jump as big as the jump from Mario World to Mario 64? From Banjo Tooie to Super Mario Sunshine? It seems like some people are demanding that others be blown away.

That's what happens when you hype people up with a E3 trailer and then the gameplay doesn't look as good.
Same goes for Zelda U.
Both look great regardless.

I think the gameplay looks just as good as in e3. People bring up the rock textures, but they weren't even different at e3. Same with the areas in the distance lacking detail. It was the same in the e3 trailer. I think people are remembering it wrong, honestly.

imo crysis is still the best looking game ever made, not even crysis 2 and 3 can reach crysis 1s level. If they want true nex gen they should focus  to being able to chop every tree you want in uncharted

Well, more and more is expected from each new gen, I suppose. I guess you should just let them be.

These people will make a big fuss is the system is made $100 / $200 expensive to make it powerful. They get what they are paying. Lol.
