Forums - Nintendo - BAD GAMES: Zelda Ocarina of Time

OOT is the only Zelda game I haven't beaten yet that I own. I have it on 3DS and I honestly don't get the praise the game gets now a days but I get it during the N64 days. I never played it during then but now it just feels like a very shitty version of twilight princess but without the wolf form or shadow realm. I got to the water temple and quit in the middle of it. In terms of today Zelda games yes OOT is bad but for a very old game it was amazing during the time it came out I guess.

It's not the greatest Zelda game by far, but the water temple is pretty easy. You only have yourself to blame if you struggled there.

I never struggled there. I just finally lost interest within that dungeon because I was struggling to keep myself going through the whole game. I've beat enough dungeons in the Zelda games to not have that much trouble.

Too bad for you because the dungeons that come after it are some of the best in the series.

Sarcasm?

some people really believe that PS1 was on par with N64

I don't care either way it goes, whether one or the other is more powerful.  I'm not sure which one you're saying, but it's pretty obvious that the screen of FF7 shown is not the best either system can do.

Out of interest what is the best graphical psone game? Obviously some of the street scenes of FF9 were lovely, resi evil done some great work with pre rendered backgrounds. Just wondering what you think the peak of it is (not including fmv stuff, altho that was a nice thing it had over the N64)

I don't really know the answer to that, I just know that FF7 isn't the example people use for looking at what the PS1 was capable of.  The easiest thing to point out about FF7 (and probably what pretty much anyone would) are the character models.

I'll have to come back and check it out then. Can't be too many left anyways considering I was pretty far into the game.

As far as visuals go, N64 beat PlayStation hands down. It's not even a comparison. There's a reason why it was rare to see cutscenes on PlayStation that weren't FMV. I'm not talking Resident Evil realtime cutscenes that took place in the pre-rendered backgrounds. I'm talking about realtime cutscenes shot in a cinematic style like what Ocarina of Time had. This is because PlayStation character models and graphics look awful from a closeup view. Don't get me wrong. Both systems had their flaws. The N64 had the blurry graphics and the fog effect while PlayStation graphics had the blocky pixilated-looking graphics. They both had their pluses too. The N64 had smoother in game graphics and more detailed character models while PlayStation had sharper looking graphics. Many people back in the day thought PlayStation had the superior graphics because on the FMV's and pre-rendered visuals that many of it's most popular games had.

In fact, since people keep bringing up Final Fantasy VII, I think when compared to Ocarina of Time, Turok 2, Conker's Bad Fur Day, or even really late PlayStation games like Chrono Cross, it's not that much of a technical achievement.

"The N64 had worse graphics than the PSOne."

I have no idea what crazy universe this idjit is living in. The N64 blows the PSOne out of the water graphically. I should know: I had a large library for both.

Not really, there was barely any difference.

Yes really, there was.

PS1 had graphics like this

And the N64?

Picture????

Yes the PS1 graphics were bad compared to the N64. But that wasn't the real thought in your mindset for 1996. We think that now. Also, the goal for the PS1 to beat the N64 in sales, was with FMV. That was the trumpt card. Along with CD quality music and playback.

I'm fully aware of that. I was aware of that even when I was 12 and 13 years old. Even though I would eventually end up playing some of these PlayStation classics (I can't believe they're actually old enough to be considered that), I remember feeling like Sony their third party supporters were conning people into buying the PS1 every time I would see an FFVII commercial or another commercial that had zero gameplay and was nothing more than a movie. Just like Sega's anti-Nintendo ads from the early 90's, most of it was utter bullshit but it was also brilliant marketing. The brilliance of it is sometihng I didn't see until years later.

I remember reading recently that in the 80's, Nintendo of America VP Peter Main used to say that the name of the game was the game. This explained why Nintendo had always relied on the game itself to sell their products rather than creating straight up propaganda. Main still felt this way in the mid 90's. Unfortunately, that's not how everybody else saw it.
