In fact, since people keep bringing up Final Fantasy VII, I think when compared to Ocarina of Time, Turok 2, Conker's Bad Fur Day, or even really late PlayStation games like Chrono Cross, it's not that much of a technical achievement.

Yes the PS1 graphics were bad compared to the N64. But that wasn't the real thought in your mindset for 1996. We think that now. Also, the goal for the PS1 to beat the N64 in sales, was with FMV. That was the trumpt card. Along with CD quality music and playback.

I'm fully aware of that. I was aware of that even when I was 12 and 13 years old. Even though I would eventually end up playing some of these PlayStation classics (I can't believe they're actually old enough to be considered that), I remember feeling like Sony their third party supporters were conning people into buying the PS1 every time I would see an FFVII commercial or another commercial that had zero gameplay and was nothing more than a movie. Just like Sega's anti-Nintendo ads from the early 90's, most of it was utter bullshit but it was also brilliant marketing. The brilliance of it is sometihng I didn't see until years later.

I remember reading recently that in the 80's, Nintendo of America VP Peter Main used to say that the name of the game was the game. This explained why Nintendo had always relied on the game itself to sell their products rather than creating straight up propaganda. Main still felt this way in the mid 90's. Unfortunately, that's not how everybody else saw it.
