Forums - Gaming - Why aren't RTS games on WiiU?

Real Time Strategy games like AoE, Civilization, XCOM... were never very popular on consoles. The controll of this games is just better with a mouse and a keyboard, because they are way more precise than a controller. However, the WiiU has an advantage over that: the GamePad.

With the GamePad you can controll the game closer to a PC than any other console ever. And if Nintendo is trying to appeal to the hardcore, what better way to introduce the usefulnes of the Pad on this genre?. The only problems I see to this are than the RTS are not popular on consoles, and the gameplay may have to be simpler to compensate the lack of keyboard. But if the game is deep enough and has decent multiplayer, it could work on the console. What do you think?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Hmm, that's a good question! Once again I feel like the GamePad is completely underused.

People have had this idea for about a year now. Would definitely be nice to see.
Maybe even a Battalion Wars game with fine tuned mix of RTS and 3rd person action elements.... and online.

Sadly though, id say the genre is pretty much dead these days. But one great game could revitalise it.

There needs to be an audience...

Nintendo could kickstart the trend by releasing their own, maybe collaborating with a 3rd party dev on a Wii U strategy game. Would be good though.

Because Nintendo hasn't made any!

Compared to normal tablets (or the PS Vita) the touchscreen of the WiiU is a bit crippled. You can't pinch a window around the units you want to select or use other intuitive multitouch gestures.

AoE is from Microsoft and Wii-U wouldn't be able to handle the latest CIV games(since it's very cpu dependend the ps4 and XOne probably wouldn't either).

But apart from that i don't think the audience is there for a complex RTS. A more simple addictive strategy game might work very well though.

And CIV isn't an RTS btw, it's turn based.

Ummm... what about this?

I was thinking of a new version of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I know the original was a reskin of AoEII, but if Nintendo asks Disney to make it and gets involved in the development of the game it could be succesfull. Not only it has the Star Wars name on it, but if it's actually made by Nintendo (I'm sure they have an studio capable of making a RTS) it could attract atention to the console. Make the game deep enough to hardcore gamers and simple to understand for the young audience of Star Wars and BINGO.

Pikmin 3 is a RTS, but not a typical, economy -building and army wars kind of RTS.

I would actually buy a RTS on my Wii U . :)
(unless of course......I decide to get it on PC.)

Oh yeah, that sounds like a good idea. The one issue is they would have to ask EA, not Disney. Since EA already bought exclusive rights to make all Star Wars games for an unspecified amount of time.

And they will loose them. Just like they lost Lord of the Rings rights........

and so, I WON'T HAVE BATTLE FOR MIDDLE EARTH 3 !!!!!!

I hate you EA.  Litterally most of my hate is for the above reason. ^

66% of the game series you listed in the OP don't even belong to the RTS genre.

They play quite well on any console.
