Forums - Gaming - Why aren't RTS games on WiiU?

Nintendo could kickstart the trend by releasing their own, maybe collaborating with a 3rd party dev on a Wii U strategy game. Would be good though.

Do Blizzard still have the requisite expertise in RTS, or have they lost all of their RTS talent in the time that they've spent almost entirely on MMOs?

If they've still got the expertise, maybe they're the ones Nintendo should approach about doing a new Battalion Wars game, perhaps with Nintendo agreeing to a combination deal of providing half of the funding and various QA and art direction people, as well as hardware experts (that is, people who know the Wii U hardware, and thus can help in optimisation and learning of the hardware), to work with Blizzard on making two games: Battalion Wars U, and Warcraft U.

BWU would have more of an active role element, where players actually take on a character on the battlefield (who they control directly on the TV while the Gamepad allows the RTS gameplay) and give commands that take time to reach their comrades (thus being a game about managing your army rather than directly controlling them), while Warcraft U would be more traditional, allowing the player to command everyone on the battlefield directly and instantaneously, as with previous Warcraft games.

Am I crazy, or would that make for a good way to help strengthen ties with Activision Blizzard, revitalise a dying genre, make good use of the Wii U's strengths, and possibly even give encouragement for future development of MMOs like WoW for the system?

The gamepad doesn't look precise enough for an rts, all you would see is gamers rage because they can't select their units or buildings properly. for turn based (civ or total war) the wii U isn't powerful enough for any games out there they'll have to water down pretty much all of them to get them to run on the wii U

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I said months before the Wii U's release that it had a lot of potential with strategy games and with complex RPG games which need far more buttons than provided by standard layout controllers. These are two areas where mouse & keyboard typically annihilate consoles. With WoW, for example, I had damn near the entire keyboard mapped to a skill or gear-set and I wouldn't even want to play Fallout or Elder Scrolls without my hotkeys filled to the brim.

I was actually kind of excited for the Wii U based on potential. Alas, very little of it ever materialized.

Because no third party!

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

They should make like another Pokemon Conquest but like Pokemon Civilization if they want an audience to surface

Pikmin 3 it's a RTS game, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Because there isnt any 3rd party party games on wii u no matter the genre. Also the only strategy related title nintendo has made for it is pikmin.. In all honesty RTS is nonexistant on any console and to be fair it just doesnt work without being dumbed down.

The biggest hope console only owners have right now is through the announced sony and paradox interactive partnership. They mainly create grand strategy games. I might pick up the upcoming hearts of iron iv for my ps4 if that gets announced for it since grand strategy titles lends itself more to limited control option because you can pause time and manage your units, productions, diplomacy, well pretty much everything without needing to worry about reacting before its too late.

With this:

The next logical step is this:

Actually blizzard was not totally against the idea:
http://kotaku.com/5919333/blizzard-says-starcraft-on-wii-u-might-work
but well, this was before the wiiu launch.

The only thing we can do for now is wait for hex heroes:

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

66% of the game series you listed in the OP don't even belong to the RTS genre.

They play quite well on any console.

Sorry for that. I shoud have included Empire Earth or Starcraft instead, but I was thinking about any kind of 4X strategy game.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

WiiU hasn't really sold enough for third-party devs to take the risk of releasing a console RTS, even though the gamepad makes it a pretty obvious genre. If we want to see RTS games on WiiU then Nintendo are going to have to show third-parties that there is an audience for the genre.
