Forums - Gaming - Should multiplayer AAA titles have manditory betas?

This is bull if you know the attitude gamers have about betas.

People play a beta and if anything is wrong with it people will say "IT'S JUST A BETA, EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE AND WILL BE BETTER IN THE FINAL VERSION!!!" Which has never been true anywhere. But people keep pretending that beta is some kind of an experimental version that can be totally different from the final version instead of being an almost complete game where at most minor changes can happen.

If there would have been an ACU beta everyone would've said and believed that Ubi would fix the performance issues until launch which would have not been the case.

So yeah, betas are useless for the most part.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

But they can make betas that cost 50 dollars, patch the bugs, add some content for a few more bucks, then release the 1.0 as a GOTY edition one year later.

Why would they realease a free alpha ?

Multiplayer heavy games of any sort should have Betas. Even if it's only a couple of maps/circuits, you have to do some decent testing of the online functionality with a global reach. Personally I think every PSN+ and XBL Gold member (tee hee Goldmember) should be in a lottery for closed Betas. Even if there's no open Beta having a substantial number of players around the world participate in a closed Beta will help.

Or... consumers could stop buying broken games so devs have to make sure they work.

They should have mandatory gammas. :P

no they should be tested before release, like they used to do a long long long time ago in 2006

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Mandatory? Like a law? Congress has better things to do with their time.

If you mean just a common, expected industry practice, I think it would be a good idea, but developers will be the ones that ultimately are punished if gamers react accordingly.

Did you watch the video? I mean, the guy has a point. A lot of crap has been put out and a lot of first day buyers have been getting screwed. Aliens: Colonial Marines was just a disaster and this AC game didn't help anything either. Again, this is only hypothetical. I'm cool either way, I just wanted to see what you guys had to say. If fans were actually involved maybe we would see a turn around in development adhering to the needs of the consumer increasing consumer trust in developers. I mean internal quality control teams are always needed but it would be great to see more betas.

no beta won't solve the issue. All the hardware manufacturers need to get tougher on them.

Of course not. They just need to work on release. If that requires a beta for a certain developer, then they should have one.

Personally, its becoming increasingly obvious after Assassin's Creed Unity that AAA multiplayer games need to have beta's. I agree with BrokenGamezHD about this. In fact it we should have demos of the closest product we can get to the finished one for single player as well. As he said, its free work and future consumers could feel like they are apart of the development process and it doesnt come at a hiring cost for companies. This would to lead to a much better relationship between consumers and developers.

Or people could just wait to buy their games till they hear about it. If that happens on 2 big games it will change the industry. It will put the power back into the consumers hands and if those games are bug riddled and unfinished they won't be purchased. These companies spend too much money to have to totally fail like they would. It would encourage them to make a proper quality product again with proper product testing.

I don't think beta's will help at all. They haven't for many games and many just use them to play a game for free without giving proper feedback. Demo's are different from beta's but they can be coded to be completely bug free while the game could be riddled with bugs.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.
