Forums - Sony - SONY FY14 Q2: Results $1.2bn loss. 3.3m ps4 shipped.

That loss is terrible but expected.
PS4 shipments are great but I expected the division to be more profitable.

I disagree about the gaming division profits. To be profitable this early in a new generation is actually very good, especially for Sony which has never really profited like gangbusters, contrary to many people's beliefs. To see this turn around year over year this early in a generation is really quite good considering the general way Sony handled hardware margins in this area in the past. It shows they made really good sound decisions in the division to be able to turn a profit so soon. The problem is that as a whole it doesnt do much or give them great leverage because its so slim compared to their losses so its great but in the end for the company overall, nearly meaningless.

mixed results IMO.

Pro:

- hardware shipment for PS4
- a lot more divisions profitable now

Con:

- obviously mobile is a mess and it won't change anytime soon
- PSVita / PSTV is a failure
- The profitable divisions are only profitable because of the weak Yen

If the Yen strengthens again, Sony is in even bigger problems.

shhhh you! (I didnt want to talk about this.)

lol, seriously

Whilst this is true and universally missed here... the yen is set to weaken further as Abe buys Japan some more time, so Sony will benefit for some time yet.

Japan WILL have an almightly fall at some point in the future though.  They are storing up a WORLD of trouble.

to be honest I don't know why there are only a few investors are realising how crucial the situation is.
I can't believe the Japanese market is rising due to shortterm effects. I for one would not invest one dollar in a Japanese company right now.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

No, they are charging for online, PS4 is selling extremely well, and PS3 would be quite profitable now. TLOUS R also sold so well and must have been cheap to make. Vita might be losing a little bit of money. Considering all those things, I expected higher profits.

Well gladly PS4 is still selling like a rocket. Even if the mother company fail to support, PS brand will still better then rest of other brand. There is no doubt even PS5 will come out in 6 to 7 years from know on and Sony will be back on track.

However, a weaker yen is negative for Sony as a whole, Yoshida said, with the company losing 3 billion yen for every yen the Japanese currency falls against the dollar.

Yes a weaker yen is pretty helpful for Sony..Lmao

PS4 is not reported by yen anymore... they changed... it is reaported cost by dollar.

So it really bad a weaker yen.

For PS3 the costs are reported in yen... so the weak yen was better.

Summary:

PS4 = Week yen = Bad
PS3 = Week yen = Good

The only way this makes sense is if the majority of Sony's products sell in Japan. Sony needs to start selling more products overseas again.

Read my preivous response...

Sony contract with PS4 is in dollar... not in yen anymore... so for PS3 weak yen was better but for PS4 not.
