Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is 2014 the least impressive year in gaming history?

@Fusioncode. Well, this year there weren't MANY great indie games. Child of Light is the only other that comes to mind.

Well, there has not been any great indie game for you, then. Child of Light it's not inde. I, on the other hand, liked Shovel Knight a lot, so that's one for me.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

I sincerely believe that anyone that says this probably hasn't played any of these supposed "disappointments". And I would encourage them to stop being youtube gamers and go out and actually play these games.

I have bought and played
- Tomb Raider DE (skipped it on PS3)
- Infamous Second son (most fun I had with an infamous game)
- MGS5: Ground zeroes
- Watchdogs (this was a very good game, contrary to what some may say. then again I wasn't expecting much)
- Child of Light (one of the best games I have played this year)
- The last of Us RM (also skipped it on PS3, this alone made my year)
- Destiny (yes I was a little disappointed with this one, good game but has a lot of little annoyances)
- Driveclub (don't believe the BS. This is pure racing fun. Its exactly what its supposed to be.)

And I still have on my list for this year
- Assassin's Creed Unity (though it will be the first PS4 game I buy used. actually the first disc I would own)
- GTA5 RE (skipped it on PS3, again this game alone should make my year)
- COD AW (the first COD I am buying since modern warefare, has a big enough leap to warrant purchase)
- Farcry 3 (not sure if its still coming this year, may hold out on it till next year though)
- LBP 3

Now even if you are a PS4 owner and played all the cross gen games on the PS3 last year, there is still plenty this year to play so I never quite understand what people are talking about when they are complaining about no games to play.

When did I complain about not having games to play?

Me thinks you missed the point of the thread.

My bad, then you mean that compared to previous years there hasn't been any stand out game this year?

If thats what you mean then I agree with you.

I mean nothing against Journey, but you know 2012 was bad when such a small indie game swept the GOTY's.

And well, responding finally the question. I hardly would say that. 2012 was a very boring game for me. Only Xenoblade Chronicles, Dishonored, Mass Effect 3 and Halo 4 are titles that I truly remember and still play sometimes today.

For me, 2012's been the worst year in recent memory, but both years haven't been particularly great. They just didn't have enough major releases for me. For 2012, I liked Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed III (favourite in the series), The Walking Dead, Theatryhthm and the Vita, but nothing really stood out for me. I'd say my GotY that year was Walking Dead, but I liked Wolf Among Us just as much, and that's not gonna end up being my favourite game this year.

For 2014, I liked Watch_Dogs (come at me, I thought it was good), Mario Kart 8, Infamous: Second Son, Hyrule Warriors, Smash Bros for 3DS and DKC: Tropical Freeze, but again, nothing particularly stands out for me. That said, 2014 has Smash Bros. for Wii U, so that gives it the slight upper hand. Just like with Wii U in 2013, PS4 has been pretty barren for it's first year. I've bought 3 games for the system this year. Kinda disappointing, but I know it'll have better years in the future.

2012 was a horrid year for gaming and I think this year easily trumps that one. I remember Journey and Dishonored literally being the only memorable new games I played that year. I already have played more memorable games this year (Dark Souls 2, Bravely Default, Mario Kart 8, South Park, Forza Horizons 2, Smash Bros 3DS) and there's still some great looking games coming like Sunset Overdrive, Dragon Age Inquisition, Bayo 2, Halo MCC, Smash Wii U, and Captain Toad. Overall I'd say its a pretty average year in gaming. Neither bad like 2012, nor amazing like 2011.

It's mainly bad in terms of X1/PS4 exclusives, but that's the devs fault for being so stubborn about cutting last gen life support. The last gen support has never been this strong this long into a new gen in the past, and the new gen first year games have never been this underwhelming as a whole. Coincidence? Doubt it.

Totally agree. I don't remember a single memorable game releasing that year.
Maybe Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. Still a pretty horrible year.

The first Forza Horizon was pretty good.  Dead or Alive 5 was decent.  RE6 was a big letdown.  Still have Assasins Creed 3 and Need For Speed Most Wanted in my backlog.  Probably only going to try AC3 for a bit to see how bad it really is.  I'm pretty sure I will like Tales of Xilla 2 once I have it but that was only 2012 in Japan.

Clearly, not unless you have a Nintendo console.

I think people are confusing "worst year in gaming history" as "no good games at all."

This year has games that have been good or are looking to be really good, but the fewest when you compare it to other years.

It is disappointing compared to last year I agree with you on that.
Nothing on any system lived up to Infinite, Last of Us, and GTA last year.

Well for ms fans no. Titanfall was great. Horizon 2 great. Ori looks awesome. And halo mcc is the best thing for me since almost ever. Cant comment on sunset overdrive yet. Plus killer instinct season 2. My faveourite fighting game. Been a good year this year.
