Forums - Gaming - Is 2014 the least impressive year in gaming history?

2012 was a horrid year for gaming and I think this year easily trumps that one. I remember Journey, Xenoblade, and Dishonored literally being the only memorable new games I played that year. I already have played more memorable games this year (Dark Souls 2, Bravely Default, Mario Kart 8, South Park, Forza Horizons 2, Smash Bros 3DS) and there's still some great looking games coming like Sunset Overdrive, Dragon Age Inquisition, Bayo 2, Halo MCC, Smash Wii U, and Captain Toad. Overall I'd say its a pretty average year in gaming. Neither bad like 2012, nor amazing like 2011.

It's mainly bad in terms of X1/PS4 exclusives, Sony in particular has stunk it up this year despite their continued success with PS4. But that's the devs fault for being so stubborn about cutting last gen life support. The last gen support has never been this strong this long into a new gen in the past, and the new gen first year games have never been this underwhelming as a whole. Coincidence? Doubt it.

Definitely not. IMO Dark Souls 2, Shadow of Mordor, Evil Within, Wolfenstein New Order, MK 8 are all great games. Along with that PS4 releases on Diablo 3 and Metro Redux (both a which i played for the first time this year) are additional bonuses which kept me busy. And I have not even played Infamous SS, Titanfall, DC, Forza Horizon, Destiny etc.

With Dragon Age 3, AC Unity, Far Cry 4, Bayonetta 2 amongst others coming up, I think this year would be good year overall.

I think veteran gamers just need to take a break and start afresh as many just seem bored.

Anyways, OT, I have to agree that 2014 has been one of the, if not, and more than likely, the worst year in gaming. There are games I'm interested in or have purchased and enjoyed, but most of what's been released this year hasn't really been special. Aside from a few games early this year and a few games late in the year, this year is really meh to the amount of quality released compared to other years.

Well if you compare it to 1997 that gave us

Grand Theft Auto
Gran Turismo
GoldenEye 007
Final Fantasy VII
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Tekken 3
Mario Kart 64
Street Fighter III
Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Fox 64

then almost any year sucks

''Hadouken!''

Shadow of Mordor, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros U, Sunset Overdrive, Halo Master Chief Collection, Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, GTA V Remastered (I've avoided replaying on the 360 so it'll feel fresher on PS4). It's been a good year, just a few hyped games that ended up being mediocre-good instead of great.

@Fusioncode. Well, this year there weren't MANY great indie games. Child of Light is the only other that comes to mind.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

2014 has...

The best Mario Kart game ever, the best Super Smash Bros. game ever, the first portable Smash Bros. game, the best Donkey Kong Country game ever, the long-awaited Bayonetta sequel (that could take GOTY), a crazy Zelda spin-off and I think we round off a pretty decent year.

Mario Kart and Donkey Kong were solid games but I wouldn't call them masterpieces. Hyrule Warriors has a 75 meta, nothing spectacular about that. Bayo2 is great and I'm sure Smash Bros will be awesome but do either of those compare to GTAV or Bioshock Infinite?

Smash is not a shooter. Bayonetta 2 is not a sandbox. Not sure why each should be worse than the other.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is releasing in one month so no it is far from the least interesting year in gaming for me.

Considering we got Forza Horizons 2 this year, I'm going to say no. This year is awesome. FH2 alone makes the year for me.

Looking forward to MCC and Sunset Overdrive as well.

This,  but not looking forward to MCC but might give the single player campaigns a try my younger brother will buy it at launch since he really likes FPS, I rarely play them.  Sunset Overdrive on the other hand I'm looking forward to as well not sure if it will be a great game but should at least be fun to play.

Oops I forgot to mention Tropical Freeze as well, lol. I actually really liked the game, but I hate to admit it doesn't stick out very much.
