well, Some should be deleted. For example, I've entered perfectly innocent looking threads only to be blasted by a string of profanities.
Although, I do agree that the posts should just be blanked, with a button to see them if you really want. This system would allow those who don't care to see what is there to easily ignore it, and those who are curious can still find out.

I think that an offensive post should be made invisible, but sometimes you miss a whole conversation because of a post in another topic, or worse, as you mentioned.. if the person requests to be banned or such.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind it being replaced with the ability to delete individual posts instead. We just need to be able to clean things up if spammers come in.
It's definitely annoying. I know it's a precaution method against spammers. Maybe when mods ban a user they have the option to click a button upon ban that will blink their posts out or not. It would be a nice way to discern between someone that just needs to cool off vs. someone who simply wants to spam.
