If you have something more reliable to show than pleae, be my guest and add it into the discussion. As of now these are the most reliable numbers I know. For all we know, the gap could be wider than you think!

you completely missed my point. Nobody on the PS1 or PS2 had a psn account with a load of downloads, or a gamertag or trophies. Other things like an online friends list they play with everyday. Much easier to go from that to the first proper online console than from the 360 to the PS4.

Massive credit to Sony for pulling it off so easily.

Well your point ignores 360 downloads (for the most part) won't be available on X1. I don't believe people are very attached to their gamertag or achievments. Also, I genuinely believe a lot of people went to PS4 thinking they would get away from paying for online play.

Sony chased people away from PS3 and is doing a pretty good job recovering with PS4. Kudos, but they still made Xbox serious competitor.

This certainly isn't true, because Sony announced paid online at E3, some 5 months before launch. Everybody buying a PS4 was informed, so that definitely is not a reason.

People like to assume that it was an xbox primary franchise because it sold better in the on 360. Europe was a whole different story as cod was more popular on ps3 there. Its worldwide that counts. Not worldwide in USA.

Globally in the US

No MS made the Xbox a serious competitor and I reckon nobody thought as many 360 gamers would convert to the PS4. I certinly didn't.

Xbox merely capitalized where Sony dropped the ball with PS3. PS3 had huge momentum following the PS2 but Sony fucked up.

Actually, I expected the X1 to do even worse than it has. Xbox One needed to be cheaper than PS4 to really compete, not more expensive or even equal. This time MS fucked up.

Nintendo, Sony, and MS all dropped the ball on their 3rd console.

Does this mean PS4 is the new shooterbox?

No, because other franchises actually sell on Playstation consoles.  Look at D4.  Niche franchises go to Microsoft consoles to die, while in comparison, they thrive and receive sequels on Playstation consoles.  *edited.*

Oh c'mon, you're going to use D4 as an example? lol There's tons of games that have done well on Xbox that aren't a shooter, do niche games typically sell better on Playstation? Yes but do you really think D4 would have been a much bigger success on PS4? I'd say no, despite what people say I think Playstation has been just as much as a shooterbox as Xbox, only Nintendo fans have the right to call a console that. xD

@bold Disagree. Out of the 10m sellers all xbox games excluding kinect have shooting mechanics, while out of 10m sellers for Sony they have 1 game that does not have shooting mechanics.

Exclusives above 5m for MS: All Halos ( shooters) ,All Gears (shooters), Forza 3 (racing)

Exclusives above 5m for Sony: Uncharted 2 and 3+ TLOU (shooters), MGS 4(Stealth shooter?) , GT5 (racing), LBP (Platform), God of war 3 (Action- Adventure)

MS focused on shooters for Xbox 360, while the PS3 had a more varied library. If you were looking for a shooterbox then xbox 360 would be perfect, while if you wanted a good platform or action adventure game then PS3 would be ok.

Note: Sony released some PR saying that God of war 3 sold/ shipped 5.2m in 2012. http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/120605d_e.pdf

So every consoles success has been because of the competitors being bad instead of the console being good?

The real hardcore gamers play COD on PC! Or just don't play COD at all.

That has been pretty evident starting around the 5th gen.

PS1 benefited greatly from N64 staying with carts. Saturn was DOA for various reasons.
PS2 maintained that success thanks to great 3rd party support. OG Xbox had a strong core following though.
PS3 was too expensive early on and Xbox had good momentum. That helped the 360 thrive.
Now X1 fucked up primarily on price. They simply couldn't compete with Playstation at equal or higher price.
