Forums - Sales - XB1 will last the longest!

Most people couldn't care less about apps on Windows 8...

They will start caring about them on Windows 10, and on Xbox One of all places.... why?

And let's not forget that, like the PS3 before it, the PS4 will evolve over time as well.

Consoles are always defined by the games they have. That's what determines how well they sell and how long they remain relevant, all the rest is in the "nice to have" category. So if Microsoft wants to last the longest it needs to beat Sony in the games department.

I'm not saying they can't or won't but outlasting or outselling will not come from Window 10 integration or any other side feature. It has to come from games.

This. Putting Win 10 in it has to do with a broader plan by MS. Its main effect on console gaming won't be platform longevity, but lower dev costs and easier PC-XBOne multiplat development (although yes, this could make slightly more appealing for 3rd parties developing for it in its latest years, but it's still unknown whether it would be enough to make it the longest lasting if it won't have become market leader in the meantime). But the main purpose for MS doing this is to strengthen Windows outside of PC market, everything else is a secondary target.

I wish you had made some situation analysis before just "wishing that something happens the way you want it just because it has potential in one aspect".

- First of all, even if XB1 gets full win10 integration, we know that most PCs are on an upgrade cycle less than 5 years. XB1, as a general use machine, is already outdated by several years now, and in approximately 7 years, they will be outdated by around 10 years. Maybe as a dedicated games console for which the development costs have been skyrocketing, this might be tolerable, but not for the general use. By that time, even my smart watch will be many times faster as a general use machine, let alone the PCs.

- Secondly, MS has been on a 3-year release schedule recently, and by the time the generation ends, Win12 or whatever they choose to call it will be out. I am not so sure if they can cope up with that in XB1, and even if they do, they still have to retain compatibility with all the existing user base, which means, they cannot use more than 3 GB RAM, 5-10% of the CPU-GPU resources, whatever limited hdd space has been made available to them etc.. They just cannot use the machine as a pc, as the GENERAL side enlarges, the gaming side will have to suffer due to the closed hardware. This is no PC, mister. And it is exactly why they lost so vividly to Sony in the first place, trying to be too many imperfect things to too many people.

- Third, People do not need another general use platform. People now have tablets, smartphones, streaming boxes (apple tv, chromecast, fire tv ect), laptops, chromebooks, smart TVs etc etc etc.. They have digital solutions everywhere. This will be even more pervasive in 7 years. Nobody's gonna give crap about XB1's promised integrated futures. Why would I care about XB1's skype integration while all my other machines can do the same thing? At least definitely not a compelling reason.

You know who is gonna win? The console with the best and most games, brand recognition and the best network of friends and peers. Simple it is.

Next Gen Consoles Impressions and Estimates

Yeah right! Now i see it clearly! It's almost as clear as 1080p!

I think people will be ready to upgrade quicker from this gen. The graphics where not the jump people wanted on any system.

Good points but I can't say I agree. I think the XB1 will have lots of extra features but in the end it is the games that will determine how long the XB1 lasts(same with the PS4). Everything else well they are just nice extra features. But time will tell what happens!

I really REALLY never got this argument. I have tried the One and the app switching and the number of apps (or at least ones me and most people use) are equal on both. A little double tap of the PS button lets me multitask. That's just as easy as yelling instructions at the TV for most. Hell WiiU is the best for apps given the gamepad in my experience. With the bigger install base there's no way PS4 will fall behind in this department as the people who make these apps are going to want to reach the biggest console audience. HBO and such that used to be exclusive to Xbox are now on PS3 and 4. There is no advantage here.

Good points. But in console gaming "games" sell consoles. Not apps. So this might be untrue. And all playstation consoles have a tradition of selling more than 10+ years.

X360 was microsoft best selling machine and it's already selling pretty low 9 years in the market.Xone will not stand 10 years unless some miracle turn around happens!

I bet windows 10 won't have the huge of an effect on the xbox one. And it certainly won't be able to turn around the 2-3:1 sales rate that the ps4 usually has on the xbox one on a month to month basis.

I'm not a fortune teller so I don't know. But wouldn't it be funny if the call the Xbox One successor the Xbox Three Sixty?
