Every one of Nintendo's handhelds have will have sold 70+ million (3DS will get there).
The only Nintendo console that's managed that is the Wii, and that was on the back of a dead fad.
3DS may be having it's headaches, but it's not a flop like the Wii U is (GameCube too).

There's no future for Nintendo home consoles
PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m
Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
I guess I have to go with consoles!

handhelds... I love the N64, gamecube and wii but the majority of the games I owned have been on the GBC, GBA, DS(which I own more games for than wii, 64 and gamecube combined). So I would rather a handheld though I personally have a bit more fun with consoles.

It's possible by 2016 that Nintendo could have a handheld chip that is more powerful than the Wii U in some ways, maybe with some PS4/X1 style DX11 effects.
What they should do business-wise: Handheld. With all their focus on a HH, they could keep the market alive and be successful.
My preference: Console. I'm basically done with HH's besides for mobile. Plus, local multiplayer would be lost if they went HH only.

And yet the Wii U is STILL selling better than the Vita.
Consoles. Handhelds are in great decline, and they'll have to adapt to the market sooner or later.
