Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bayonetta 2 sold 67% of it's initial shipment in Japan

If I recall correctly Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze sold 35 thousand in its first week in Japan and right now it has sold 110 thousand in Japan. That is Media Create/Famitsu ltd data I saw in Neogaf, not vg chartz.
I think Bayonetta 2 will sell better than Donkey Kong in Japan.

Then VG Chartz is spot on, they got DK: TF at 110k in Japan.

VG chartz japanese data is the average of famitsu and mediacreate IIRC, so it is trustworthy. I was wrong, it sold 43 thousand in the first week

67% isn't anything special in japan especially for a game like bayonetta. 67% would be average at best, it's high enough that it should get some kind of second shipment though. I can tell many people in this thread are new to watching japanese sales.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Is this just telling us that Nintendo / stores didn't expect to sell much?

That's good? I guess they were not expecting to sell much, and they were right.

Ultimately, selling out initial shipments is good but the true test of Bayonetta 2's health will come in the following weeks. Most non-licensed or major franchise console games sell well for a week or two in Japan before dropping off. If Bayonetta 2 can hang around in the top ten for a while that will be a success.

But ultimately, I think the major push will lie in the hands of Western Wii U owners, healthy sales outside of Japan especially since we know Nintendo won't do jack outside of online trailers to promote it will probably determine whether or not we ever see a Bayonetta 3 and potentially the fate of original stylized action games in general this generation given the frosty reception several recent big names have received in the past year or two.

39k is about what I expected. That's probably going to be 200k lifetime in Japan.

I doubt this. That would be some serious legs, which granted some Nintendo games have but almost always of the cartoony/family mascot based variety (a more casual audience that doesn't keep as much track on new game releases and buys over time).

A game like Bayonetta 2 will track more like Sin & Punishment 2, which dropped off the face of the earth after its first week.

200k with a 39k opening in Japan?

Heavly bundles?

If its relevant, the game did sell out on amazon.jp and, if I recall, Tatsuya as well. But this may just be localized anomalies.
