Multiple retailers were selling it for $20 once. BestBuy was the first, and then Target and Walmart did so as well. Target's lasted quite a while too. I regret not jumping on when I could!
For Metroid, you're thinking of how it's doing now: recall that the game bombed at first and was on fire sale shortly after release. Earthbound is a pretty good analogy, actually. For Wonderful 101, that is correct. And I stand by the comparison.

Seriously, where were you people!?! I thought this was common knowledge. The Trilogy did poorly at retail, and at first the only "supply issues" the game had was in shipping too many copies. |
I read your links and...
...I'm still not sure I believe it. Looks like it was a one week ad sale at Best Buy that other stores price matched if you showed them the ad. After that it went back up to $50. Sucks I missed the sale, but it looks like it was a pretty quick deal.
When I was looking for it, it was completely sold out online at every store I looked at. Most stores were sold out, but I managed to find a few copies. I remember when the game was announced, they said it was going to be a limited edition collectors item. The damn thing was only in print for 4 months.

It was a clearance sale, from what I can tell, and I mean that in the Lair way.
Maybe it was just in my region, I don't know, but the game was well stocked here in the Bay Area from launch (August) to after the sale (December), with every store I remember visiting that sold videogames having a minimum of one copy (one stingy Gamestop), and often a half dozen or more (Fry's, Target). Even after the sale, there were still some copies on shelves in my area: I want to say they didn't vanish until two or three months later, and it was another year after that before I first heard rumblings that the game was desired, let alone expensive.
*shrug* Maybe I was just lucky, I don't know, but I recall vascillating on whether to pick it up for so long precisely because it didn't seem like there was any reason to hurry. And the links I brought up don't seem to have many folks complaining that copies had been hard to come by prior to that or anything; I see folks talking about how they bought multiple copies, so I don't think my experience was particularly exceptional.

Tough to say I guess. I bought mine in 2010. I know I kept track of it through the holiday season. I guess I missed any sales, if there were any in the KC area.
