Why does Sony still release smartphones in the world? Not sure if by now they realize it's a lost cause.

Since you're the vgc expert on smarphones can you please provide a comparison between sony phones and xbone consoles sold?

For comparison sake I think Xbox in Japan and Sony Smartphones in the US are both doing just as bad in terms of market share.

For Xbox numbers in Japan you just have to look at the latest LTD numbers from Media Create.

For Sony smartphones Neogaf member zomgbbqftw (who reportedly works as an financial analyst) says that Sony's market share for smartphones in the US is only 0.2%. - source

Sony managed a 2.1 percent share of the global smartphone market in 2013 according to market research firm Gartner, with the majority (more than half) of their smartphones being sold in Europe and Japan.

According to comScore Reports there are 173 million people in the U.S. that own smartphones.  - source  0.2% of that is around 350 thousand though that seems low.. but whatever the exact number is it will be low with the limited number of carriers Sony has had.

If anybody else has more sources of info on US market share or corrections feel free to post and see how it compares.

Is there a real reason why they released in Japan? Not sure if by now they realize it's a lost cause.

That would be like saying they shouldn´t release in Sweden because sales will be low. Ofcourse they should even if they only have few fans there.

But marketing costs must be a lot higher due to the much much bigger population.

doesn't matter.   ms has billions of dollars.

That doesn't make sense. If your product is going to lose money in a region, why would you waste money putting it there? I also don't really get the point of the analogy.

At least they will sell an extra 1m lifetime unit over there i think...

360 barely even legged it out to a 1.5 million though, and even then it had much better results in the past suprisingly. Xbone may be lucky to sell even half a million as it is selling about 1-3K weekly now and depending on how much stock Microsoft has shipped then those numbers may end up even worse.

So I predict it to do Original Xbox numbers in Japan. Xbox has a pretty crappy reputation in Japan I heard.

Why not release there? They wouldn't do it if it was very costly..

Just cuz. It doesn't take anything to put their console in another country even if they know it's not going to sell that well.

Yeah but that's largely because they haven't released their products on enough carriers in enough markets.  This is litterally the opposite of MS' situation.

LOL I forgot a company's job is to find the best ways possible to burn its money!

cos 30k sales are better than 0 sales.
