Forums - Gaming - Why did Xbone release in Japan?

Was it a good decision to launch it in Japan?

Yes 53 29.94%

No 124 70.06%

Total:177

If anything, all console maker should market their consoles more aggressively in Japan to curb the trend from mobile back to consoles. Even the lousy 22k first week sales of the Xbox One helps.

It wasn't released. It escaped.

ITT : trying to ignore the topic of a console in Japan by discussing cell phones, lol.

Actually phones are very important for consoles in Japan.. None of the consoles are doing good... if SE is releasing a streaming service for Final Fantasy 13 and other recent games on smartphones you can't ignore smartphones in japan in the regard of console sales..  Japan’s mobile gaming market in 2013 was, at US$5.1 billion, bigger than the one for console (hardware and software combined) at US$4 billion. http://www.serkantoto.com/2014/07/30/japan-gaming-market-size-statistics/

Even Sony's own PSnow service will eat into their own console sales..

Ditch Japan, concentrate on China instead.

on the other hand you have the Smartphones from sony.. sure they sell 40 million a year but the losses it makes only show that they can't compete.. they are probably selling their phones under the price of manufacturing to carriers to stay competitive.. if you sell 40 million smartphones and yet you still can't make it profitable.. you're doing something wrong.. for years.. their hope is based on an Apple and Samsung scenario that they sell 40 million a quarter instead of in a year..

See bolded. I don't understand this logic.

Popularity. If you have a phone in demand like Samsung and Apple you can make much much better deals with carriers.. aka they pay full price for the device..
Sprint bought iphones for 15 billion! dollars.. http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/05/15/sprint-chairman-defends-iphone-deal/
Sony's phones aren't popular so to make carriers carry them they have to sell them at a price with makes them attractive for carriers like Sprint, T-mobile to pick them up. If you look at the numbers they are probably giving a huge discount to carriers.. selling them actually on a loss..

Now if you have THE phone in popularity and demand the power shifts to the manufactor like Apple had with Sprint...

So every phone company other than samsung and apple is selling at a loss? I simply can't see that being the case and I haven't seen or found any evidence to suggest that. At least with consoles it makes sense. Or I can see that happen with an unpopular line for a quarter or something, but to contiuously do that? I simply don't think any company would do that.

Yes. Most of them are selling ar barely break even... Apple and samsung actually have 106% of all the profits

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-and-samsung-have-106-of-the-smartphone-industrys-profits-2014-5

mobile phone business is dominated by them.. The others are fighting over pocket change..

Selling figures for XOne in Japan's been too low. But still it's too early to talk, let's wait a bit more.

Not too early.

Every single time one of these things happens over there, it's a downward spiral from a certain point. Barely into four digit territory is unmitigated failure of gargantuan proportions.

At this rate it will be lucky to hit 50k lifetime before the plug is pulled (or an unofficial cancellation where no stores stock it other than 1 or 2 retail, and online-only).

Why does Sony still release smartphones in the world? Not sure if by now they realize it's a lost cause.

Since you're the vgc expert on smarphones can you please provide a comparison between sony phones and xbone consoles sold?

For comparison sake I think Xbox in Japan and Sony Smartphones in the US are both doing just as bad in terms of market share.

For Xbox numbers in Japan you just have to look at the latest LTD numbers from Media Create.

For Sony smartphones Neogaf member zomgbbqftw (who reportedly works as an financial analyst) says that Sony's market share for smartphones in the US is only 0.2%. - source

Sony managed a 2.1 percent share of the global smartphone market in 2013 according to market research firm Gartner, with the majority (more than half) of their smartphones being sold in Europe and Japan.

According to comScore Reports there are 173 million people in the U.S. that own smartphones.  - source  0.2% of that is around 350 thousand though that seems low.. but whatever the exact number is it will be low with the limited number of carriers Sony has had.

If anybody else has more sources of info on US market share or corrections feel free to post and see how it compares.
