cos 30k sales are better than 0 sales.

Not really when you have to have localization, corporate staff, advertising, legal expenses, etc/infinity.

If they can't even get to 100k lifetime in Japan, there's no way they cover the expenses of launching there.

Is there a real reason why they released in Japan? Not sure if by now they realize it's a lost cause.

Even though it will not sell a lot there its still not a lost cause because besides mainland China (where it will launch later this month and is made) its the cheapest place to ship it to that actually somewhat cares about home consoles.  It will probably eventually launch in South Korea also but they care even less about home consoles then China and Japan (PC country).

Why not release there? They wouldn't do it if it was very costly..

Exactly the only place cheaper to ship it to is mainland China I doubt other costs besides shipping are that high and even if they loose some money there its still better then sitting out a generation.

I don't think they should have. Japan seems to be leaning away from consoles, plus PlayStation and Nintendo have such a strong grip on the market.
