Forums - Gaming - Bungie responds to Miyamoto

I had to do a double take when i saw the 'original' comment. I guarantee something got a bit lost in the translation between the interviewer and Miyamoto's translator. And as many have pointed out, Miyamoto appeared to use Halo as an example of a type of game he could create. (For the record, he was very influential on Metroid Prime.) I honestly loved Bungie's response. The fact of the matter is many of these talented developers could make any type of game they want to if given the proper resources. If anyone at Bungie does have the cojones to put together a platformer, please fly them over to Rare's headquarters to make sure they don't screw Banjo-Kazooie 3 up!

what do you think would be better a Miyamoto halo or a bungie mario

Miyamoto has influenced games like Metroid Prime which is typically called a First Person Adventure (because of its focus on Puzzles and Bosses rather than 'Shooting') and Battalion Wars which is typically called a Battlefield Real Time Strategy game. If Miyamoto was more directly involved I expect you'd see a game which broke from convention ... Personally, I would hope for a First Person Survival Horror Adventure game but I'm certain Miyamoto would not be that interested in developing that himself.

Bungie would probably attempt to produce a well executed generic platformer.

If both lived up to potential I expect they would both be excellent games although Miyamoto's game would (possibly) have a more rabid following because of how distinct it was.

 Agreed

Lol, Halo trolls are troooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllssssssss!

But Seriously,

Miyamoto > Bungie

Sorry guys, nothing Bungie has done has ever been that fucking phenomenal. Why isn't the head of Bungie up for person of the year like Miyamoto is? This whole thread is just rabid Halo worship by people whose first game console was at best a Playstation. I wouldn't surprise me if none of you even knew who Miyamoto was before this incident.

Without Miyamoto, there would be no console game industry, and the Pc game industry if it managed to survive by some other means, wouldn't be what it is today and Halo wouldn't be what it is either assuming it would even exist at all. Miyamoto doesn't need to pioneer a genre to influence it, his actions have sent shockwaves throughout the industry which has changed it on every level. And honestly it wouldn't be hard for Miyamoto to do Halo, and make it something to remembered for generations unlike Bungie's rushed efforts. Heck, anyone could make Halo, it's not hard. Remember, Miyamoto isn't typically the first to do things, he's just typically the one who does them the best.

Was Mario the first platformer? No. Is Mario the best Platformer ever? Arguably no. Was Mario the Best Platformer for its time? Yes.

Was Zelda the first Action Adventure game? No. Is Zelda the best Action Adventure game? Debatable. Was Zelda the best Action Adventure game for its time? Yes.

Was Metroid the first platform shooter? No. Is Metroid the best platform shooter ever? Debatable. Was Metroid the best platform shooter for its time? Yes.

Was Starfox the first flightsim shooter? No. Is Starfox the best flightsim shooter ever? Debatable. Was Starfox the best flightsim shooter for its time? Yes.

Were Earthbound and Mario RPG the first RPGs? No. Where they the best RPGs ever? No. Were they the best for their time? Arguably, yes.

And to be honest, Halo 3 could easily be a dissapointment like Halo 2 (a.k.a. Halo 1.5) so don't get too cock happy till your game arrives.

9 of the 10 times this forum is giving me a headache! The constant debating is really making me sick. Also concering banning, at most of the forums people are banned for life time, anti nintendo, anti sony what ever. If you can't stick with the forum rules, then you can go! I'm surprised this forum doesn't have a sticky rule thread.

Concerning Bungie responding on Miyamoto's saying, sound to me more like a joke of them, not even serious. All what Miyamoto meant is that he actually has a different goal of making games and that doesn't really include shooters. If he would like it, then he could make a Halo, of course, the man is not stupid! Neither are all well respected developers. But as his goal of gaming is completely different then from the makers of Bungie, he makes a Zelda and a Mario, like a Naughty Dog made Crash Bandicoot, Imnsoniac makes Ratchet & Clank. Every developer has it's own goal of making videogames and also genre. Bungie's responding of making such a game is nothing but a joke to say.... you don't make our kind of games, neither do we.

So for some around here, lightnen up! It's just a joke!

Okay since no one else seemed to catch this. Miyamoto did NOT create Metroid. Gunpei Yokoi created Metroid as well as the Gameboy etc.

Sorry dude, I beat you to the punch.

"Not Metroid, that honor befalls the late Gunpei Yokoi, the father of the Gameboy.

How about you stop with the insults?  You don't know me and I have a feeling you don't know any of the other posters either.  I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 so that shows how accurate your facts are.[/quote]

As for Miyamoto > Bungie that's your opinion and perhaps it's shared by other fans but it's not by me.  I like Western games since I've played a lot of them for decades as well as Nintendo's consoles.  I've played Nintendo's first party games since the NES (yes *gasp* I owned the NES, Nintendo 64, and Gamecube).  I bought a Nintendo 64 for Goldeneye and played it to death, then tried Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I played The Legend of Zelda and enjoyed it) but I couldn't get into Ocarina of Time, in fact I played until about halfway through (forcing myself to no less by telling myself about all the good reviews it got) then gave up because I realized a game is meant to be fun and I wasn't having fun.  I tried Mario 64 and got bored with it as well (and I remember playing Super Mario Bros. until I could wrap it) I just didn't care for it.  Oddly enough I bought a Playstation and ended up playing Tomb Raider and couldn't put it down, I got more enjoyment out of it than all the first party Nintendo games I played at that time.  Is Tomb Raider better than Nintendo's games?  For me I had more fun and couldn't put it down so personally the answer is yes, for others I imagine some enjoyed Nintendo's games a lot more.  It's all a matter of personal tastes.

As for the claim that without Miyamoto there wouldn't be a console game industry how do you know that?  After the collapse of the first generation of consoles I ended up playing a lot on the Commodore 64, it basically took over from where the consoles left off.  The PC game industry wouldn't have changed a bit and I can't see any influence from Miyamoto on it, none.  So what's to say another console manufacturer wouldn't have given it a go?  I know Nintendo had problems with the NES at the beginning but that doesn't mean that eventually another company wouldn't have tried to (and possibly suceed as well).

Oh and your "greatest games", that's your opinion not fact.  I don't even like jrpgs (I prefer computer rpgs/western rpgs) as do some of my friends and I know they wouldn't agree with you on your Earthbound opinion.  Same with Starfox, since I played flightsims on PC and flightsim shooters X-Wing, Wing Commander, etc, and enjoyed them a lot.  Anyways don't insult people or think that your opinion speaks for everyone because it doesn't.

ps.  Some people on this site wonder where the Xbox fans went, well we put up with insults like this (calling us trolls or belittling us because we happen to enjoy a certain type of game over another) while people who do the same against Nintendo fans are banned.  It's unacceptable and shouldn't be tolerated from anyone.

1. Insults? You've been insulting more than I have so don't play innocent here kid.

2. My facts? Making the statement "most of you probably haven't been gaming since before the Playstation" was something I stated as a fact? It was an assumption and still most likely an valid one, not an "accurate fact". Good grief you'll twist the simplest of statements to try and make a jab.

3. Your love for Western games is your personal problem, not mine so please don't cry foul when your own bias is called on you. I hate Walt Disney but that doesn't keep me from acknowledging his early animated films as one of the intigral inspirations of early Anime and in its own way affecting all modern anime as we know it. Reality is not based on East vs West, its based on facts.

4. First generation consoles are Pong consoles and you claimed you haven't been gaming since Atari 2600 which is second generation, get your facts strait. The Commodore 64 did pick up where many consoles fell off but it failed for the same reason the second generation did, lack of quality control and no innovation. I suppose if you want to you could argue PC games would still be around today because of Solitare but seriously I doubt you'd see more than 16bits especially with the amount of ram taken to run games on most computers at the time. Without the console market to bait the PC market in what could be done there would be nothing pushing PC developers to make better games for the PC.

5. If you actually bothered to read my "greatest games" you would understand much better I was trying to say, next time don't skim through someone's response before haphazardly replying to it.

6. Yes, it is so terrible 360 fans are persecuted, its as if Nintendo fans have had to put up with yours and Sony's shit for the last seven years or something, crazy isn't it? And now that we're rising to the top you're still acting like yours is the biggest dick on the block and will always be that way. Who would have thought that anamosity might arise towards a group largely comprised of 13 year old boys who think saying "fuck" when their parents aren't around is the coolest thing in the world, whose tact in internet debating is best illustrated by their shit talking on Xbox live.

7. (In response to others). Metroid was Miyamoto's concept, Gunpei yoko just made and developed the game, it still counts as one of Miyamoto's children.

Unbelievable, you still continue this? "I could have mede game like Halo, but i choose not to" "OMG WTF, Miyamoto couldn't make Halo" "We are currently working on 2D platformer" "OMG WTF, Bungie can't make 2D platformer" About computer gaming, it has been strong for only 10 to 15 years, and it has been influenced by console gaming. It is hard to what would the gaming world look like today, without Miyamoto, but it would look much different. That's same thing as saying that what would PC world look like today without Micro$oft or Apple, or what would the world of cars look today without Ford or Toyota. Anyway, looking at games before the gaming crash in US, there were games made just because they were games. For example, there were even a game, which was as shitty as it can be, with its only purpose to market burgers. Miyamotos games raised the quality in to a new level from the bottom, where it was. And we really can't argue, that is game A better than game B, since everyone has their own opinions about it. Or, of course we can, but its useless. @BenKenobi Metroid Prime is different from normal shooters, because it's an adventure game. Nintendo has stated it being FPA (First Person Adventure), and you can't disagree, that it has much more adventure elements, than shooter elements. No-one is stating Zelda as 3rd person swordfighting.
