More bullshit, I wish we had more women playing video games I wish my wife could play something with me.

How is the Nintendo fanbase and Zelda fanbase in your country??? Here most of gaming is for males independent of console and genre (besides of course facebook and smartphone games). |
Well I live in the States. I can't speak for the whole country, but I feel like most of the young adult women I've known have been more inclined towards Nintendo platforms than to others. And Zelda seems to have a very mixed fanbase compared to, say, Metroid's apparently predominantly male fanbase.
That said, I wonder if Nintendo would have bragged about it if Link Between Worlds had been a big seller among women the way they did Animal Crossing.

I see... well I for one hope for the re-emergion of B, A and AA class of games (sold cheaper on release) and maybe that would be the place to start trying games that would appease more toward women...
I don't think all games need to be cutting edge and look great, and for that have high budget and need big market to recoupe.

But, this 19- to 24-year-old female demographic, they’re the smartphone people, right? It’s often said that female casual gamers don’t need dedicated hardware, and yet here they are reaffirming the value of these machines.” Not all adult women gamers are Candy Crush addicts, guys. |
Animal Crossing is a game designed to appeal to women. It'd be more surprising if female didn't represent a large portion of users.

I play multiplayer with two females. Not I play using two female characters. Although I've gotten all six characters to ultimate, so I play with three female characters if that's what you meant. |

Women do play. They just don't play the types of games men think of when they think of video games.
Candy Crush, Tetris, Farmville, Angry Birds, etc. etc. etc.
Notice none of these games has a "main character" and they are puzzle/building type games.
I think boys/men really gravitate to this concept, women just don't.

It is designed to appeal to everyone. That's why women don't make up 70%+ of the fanbase.

In Japan yeah I wouldn't be surprised if a bulk of Animal Crossing's players are female, but it's more socially acceptable to carry a handheld gaming device there if you're not a kid.
The DS was making some good inroads with women, but smartphones completely wiped that out here in the West. You wouldn't see a grown woman caught dead with a 3DS these days. Once girls get their first smart device, it's pretty much over for Nintendo. The fact that they can social network/Facebook/Twitter/listen to their favorite music/text message/Instagram on phones on top of playing games on it just kills anything Nintendo might offer in response.

Maybe not a middle-aged woman, but I believe you're wrong if we're talking about the same 19-24 age range as Iwata.

Outside of a comic book convention I've never seen a 17-24 year old girl with a 3DS. And I travel a ton, am in about 30-40 major airports a year. Not once.
This is pretty much the average female teenager, 3DS need not apply:

Iwata is talking about Animal Crossing numbers from Japan I believe btw. The demo split is not the same in North America, nor is Animal Crossing as popular in the West period.
