Polygon count? *ahem* Frame rate! How often when playing a game do we bother counting polygons?
As for sales, how many units does Bayo2 need to sell to break even? Does anyone here know?

I bet that is the only reason why some people are buying the game!

For me, Bayo's nice ass is just the icing on the cake!

Yeah, that's what I mean. In fact, someone was comparing this to God of War III earlier, saying that GOW had more polygons, and this is exactly where my logic comes in - I'm not seeing numbers when playing something, but watching footage of both games I did see individual polygons on GOW but didn't on Bayonetta. |
What? You saw individual polygons in GOW? Not even PS1 games look that bad. And GOW III definitely has better graphics than Bayonetta.
So you saw individual polygons in this:

I don't see polygons in this picture, but they were quite noticeable in a gameplay video I watched once. I mean, they weren't aggravating by any means, but still noticeable. |
What you saw weren't individual polygons lol, they are something known as aliasing. Look it up.
Aliasing is very much prevalent in a game running at 720p on PS3, and even they seem even more glaring in a highly compressed video on Youtube. You can't really judge how a game looks on Youtube.
I've actually PLAYED both and Bayonetta has more aliasing, even on the 360 version, than GOW III. Bayonetta 2 however will certainly have less aliasing due to running at a much higher resolution.
Hope I was able to explain well.

I know what aliasing is and I'm pretty sure that's not what I saw. Looking it up and watching it again... this is the one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoc4PYVewF4 There are noticeable polygons in both the environment and the boss itself - they're not aggravating by any means, and the game does look very impressive given the year and console in which it was released, but they're there. It's not aliasing. |
I saw the video and no individual polygon can be seen here. It can't be humanly possible to pick out 1 polygon out of over 1 million polygons. You seem to be confusing it with something else.

You're right but of course you're going to see polygons on Cronos' finger, the character is 1000 times larger than Kratos' model and the camera is contantly zoomed in on him.
Imagine blowing up Bayonetta's character model 1000x and then zooming into her finger, it would probably be more polygonal than Cronos'.
Comparing similar scenes GoW3 still looks a lot better than Bayo2 in terms of lighting, shaders and textures. Also looks better in motion despite not being 60fps due to its depth of field and per pixel motion-blur effects. Bayo2 may have an advantage in polycount but it lacks in other areas.

I wasn't trying to say they didn't use it at all. Just that western devs generaly rely on it more. Platinum specifically tend to mix both styls well. Compared to say Team Ninja that tend to go crazy with geometry for example
And for Kratos in GoW3 specifically they actually use blended normal maps where they have a bunch of different normal maps that they blend together in different ways to stimulate muscle movement and animated wrinkles/vains etc. It was one of the first games to use it. Max Payne 3 also used it to great effect. Oh and he is bald that saves a lot of polys. |
I actually didn't know that. Interesting.

We're not watching the same video then. Most noticeably around the 1:00 mark, there are some moments when you can actually notice the polygons. Specifically, at about 50 seconds into the clip, you can clearly see them in the rock that Kratos is standing on. |
Yeah, I see it too, on the rocks in the foreground at 0:50 and on the fingers.
Really though, what's it gonna do? It's a PS3 game after all. Not really fair to expect it to have perfect, angle-free geometry.
