it is a 3DS new model nothing more, it has a better cpu, and wii ports are possible, but in all sense is a 3ds nwe model, is not a new system.

How is it in all sense just a 3DS model?  New CPU, plays different games that are not compatible with 3DS, so in all senses other than the name, it's not a 3DS any more than 3DS is a DS.

The only difference is that since 3DS is still an actively used system, it will end up being supported as parallel systems the way GameBoy and GameBoy Color were parallel systems with different game shelves.

Depends on whether or not consumers got confused en masse by the "New iPad". If they did, then yeah, this'll have some trouble unless it gets re-named in the West.

I don't think it matters much. Unlike with the Wii U where Nintendo needed people to buy it because it was their new console and they were dropping support for the Wii, the New 3DS is not replacing the original ones -- or more importantly, New 3DS titles are not replacing 3DS releases. Nintendo will continue developing 3DS games and selling them to their 40 million+ user base. That's where the money is made.

People keep bringing up confused parents, but I don't know what 8 year old kid or whatever put Xenoblade Chronicles on his Christmas wish list. Clearly this hypothetical child's parents are doing something right, but as I said I don't think that will be an issue. The 2DS is for children. The new 3DS is for teens and adults -- for now, until Nintendo announces exclusive Pokemon games for these things, and then they're for everyone.

Yeah right... like Nintendo has the marketing and and the stores equivalent to Apple.

I don't think New 3DS would be a good name.  Hope they change it to "Super ThreeDS" or something .

"You need the NEW 3DS to play this game!"

"But I already had a 3DS!"

"No, you really do need a NEW 3DS to play this game. It says so on the cover."

"I bought my 3DS two weeks ago. It's new."

Rinse and repeat.

Wii ports were possible for the 3DS. Look at Donkey Kong Country Returns. But, yeah, Xenoblade is totally going to require the new hardware.

Game Boy -> Game Boy Colour
DS -> DSi
3DS -> New 3DS

There will be a small handful of games that only run on the New 3DS, but other than that it's just a new model with a few new features to boost sales.

Not really. There was a small handful of games that only worked with GBC, but 90%+ of them played just fine on the old GB without colour.

Yeah, I can see this causing a bit of confusion for consumers between the normal 3DS, and "new". They should have just followed last gens naming scheme (which everyone got) and called it the 3DSi.

If they stick with that stupid name, yes.

I am hoping that one of the reasons for the NoA and NoE delays besides Japan keeping much of the initial stock for themselves is that the Western branches are working on a better name for the device then just "New" Nintendo 3DS. Heck, even calling it 3DSi or 3DS PRO would be better.

But if it does indeed launch as just "New" that will be proof that Nintendo has some incompetent people naming their devices.
