It would be a really bad move to delay Smash Bros. Terminally bad really, for the Wii U. I think the MK8 DLC is just to put some more meat on Nintendo's Christmas line-up. We'll see

Because they're post-2010 Nintendo and they have the self-preservation of a snowman going on holiday to the tropics.

I agree they can't afford to. But they couldn't afford to let Wii U fall into a game drought for the first eight months of its life either, but they did. |
That's actually a slightly exaggerated claim.
In the first eight months of the Wii U's life, Nintendo released the following (US dates):
November 2012: NSMB U, Nintendo Land, Sing Party (+ Ninja Gaiden 3)
March 2013: Lego City Undercover
June 2013: Game & Wario
There were some other titles then, as well, but they were third-party, of course. The point being, Nintendo did try to keep the period filled.
The more important thing, though, is that Nintendo will make sure Smash 4 U is released this year, even if it means that they have to leave some stuff out, to be added as DLC, as they did with Mario Kart 8.
By the way, while your "delay senses" are tingling, my amiibo senses are tingling. The timing of the MK8 DLC seems suspiciously timed given that Nintendo made a point to emphasise that MK8 would have amiibo functionality. I suspect that an update will occur that adds amiibo support. This may also relate to why Link's DLC, specifically, is being released in November.
So, when would the MK8 DLC have dropped if Smash was on-schedule?
I bet it would have dropped in November, because it is dropping in November, and Smash is on schedule.

That's what worries me, in the nearly 3 months since E3 we haven't heard diddly squat about amiibo. The silence is deafening.

What I understood from E3 was that Amiibo was first only launching for Smash during the holidays, and that support would be added to the already released titles at a later date.
lolno.. Smash Bros WiiU will come out this year no matter what!

Seems I spoke too soon on amiibo.
Check out the range of #amiibo that will be coming to stores later this year. Who's your favourite? pic.twitter.com/aY1wSAteGq
