The business impact on a successful DDoS attack can be quite substantial. It can involve financial losses, reputation damage, customer agitation and (sometimes) legal repercussion. Honestly, the only difference between a DDoS attack and actual hacking is that on the latter your customer information is potentially at risk, the rest of the consequences are pretty much the same.
The above of course depends on the length of the attack, many companies disguise a minor DDoS attack as a service maintenance because it takes very little time to resolve the issue, but in some cases it can take a long time.
