Theres no war when there's (virtually) no competition.

Not pictured: the GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, DS, and 3DS.

Wouldnt the Magnavox Odyssey count as the winner of Gen 1? I thought it was the first, if not one of the first consoles on the market in time of release. I dont know too much about it so I could be wrong

Sheer sales numbers aside, Genesis and Sega won the 16 bit gen. They went form 10 million sold to 40 where nintendo actually lost marketshare. Too bad they fucked up the 32 bit gen to a point of no return.
Rest of them are bang on.

Funny, last I checked, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 globally, and it's almost tied in the US....

Wait, what?

Even if it's the most likely, it's still pretty premature.

| alabtrosMyster said: I think this is the only one that's kind of fuzzy, the Genesis was abruptly discontinued by Sega in 1994 as soon as they released the Saturn, Nintendo actively supported the SNES well into the N64s life! (to their benefit). One could argue that this was a tie while the Genesis was on the market. There were also regional differences, like in most console generations, in Japan the Mega Drive was not very popular and Sega sold most consoles in the States, while the Super Famicom completely dominated the Japanese market, granting us some amazing JRPGs with superb sound tracks... As for the add-ons, I would argue that the Sega CD had a purpose and was interesting to own back then, it was also released early enough, just avoid the FMV games... while the 32X was a stupid mistake pushed by the american management at Sega, it was unreliable and would not let you play games that could compete with the right around the corner, Saturn and PSX. |
The console war is a marathon, not a sprint. Nintendo was able to go the distance with a strong overall library, Sega wasn't. Nintendo kept releasing strong games right up to the N64 launch, while Sega petered out well before the Saturn and PS1 launched and tried to fix their problems with the Sega CD and the 32X. So Nintendo's win in the 16-bit era was still a clean victory.
