So nothing new . . .

I think we should all thank Nintendo for getting Sony into the gaming industry. Without Nintendo, the Playstation brand probably wouldn't exist.

What have we learned today, kids?

Funny, last I checked, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 globally, and it's almost tied in the US....

Wait, what?

He meant: "Globally in the US".

Oh. You.

I am in total agreement here. Sony has been wrecking face since they came into the console wars, and even the one loss with the PS3 they are still looking to win it again.

I think this is the only one that's kind of fuzzy, the Genesis was abruptly discontinued by Sega in 1994 as soon as they released the Saturn, Nintendo actively supported the SNES well into the N64s life! (to their benefit). One could argue that this was a tie while the Genesis was on the market.

There were also regional differences, like in most console generations, in Japan the Mega Drive was not very popular and Sega sold most consoles in the States, while the Super Famicom completely dominated the Japanese market, granting us some amazing JRPGs with superb sound tracks...

As for the add-ons, I would argue that the Sega CD had a purpose and was interesting to own back then, it was also released early enough, just avoid the FMV games... while the 32X was a stupid mistake pushed by the american management at Sega, it was unreliable and would not let you play games that could compete with the right around the corner, Saturn and PSX.

The console war is a marathon, not a sprint. Nintendo was able to go the distance with a strong overall library, Sega wasn't. Nintendo kept releasing strong games right up to the N64 launch, while Sega petered out well before the Saturn and PS1 launched and tried to fix their problems with the Sega CD and the 32X. So Nintendo's win in the 16-bit era was still a clean victory.

The Mega Drive was also released two or three years before, so the SNES caught up and pulled ahead nicely.

Let's just stop and think about this for a second.  Before Sony came into the market the highest selling console of all time (ALL TIME) was NES with ~60m.  Sony's LOWEST selling console in its history has sold over 80m!  Seriously they have not failed yet (except for Vita I guess lol)

That's true enough, too, though I don't think the Genesis/MD really started to take off until Sonic the Hedgehog came out. But Christmas 1994 on the SNES was awesome. By that time, Sega had put the Genesis on the back burner while they focused on the Sega CD and the 32X and (in Japan) the Saturn.

I can agree with these choices.

I find it annoying that they skipped the N64/PS/Saturn as far as I can tell.

Why in the world the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) isn't on there.
