Forums - Gaming - Yoshida claims Sony doesn't know why PS4 is selling so well.

Yeah, it doesn't really deserve to sell that well (imo) as Sony did nothing special. There aren't many new games out on it and that's probably one of the reasons why a year old remaster is selling so much. PS4 seems to be selling purely on brand awareness and the fact that it's relatively cheap (compared to PS3 at launch).

Because ps3 owners don't enjoy their console anymore and they buying ps4 and Xbox one will sell better when people get bored of Xbox 360

Seeing as the PS3 has been selling more games on a weekly basis than the 360 for a while, that doesn't seem to be the case. If people were bored of the PS3 (compared to the 360), they'd be buying less games, not more :p

It does make sense though. The PS3 has been the more popular console in recent years and the 360 is older. It makes sense that the average current PS3 owners would currently be more satisfied (thus buy more games).

I never got that arguement ever...

the PS3 is currently outselling the 360 so you would think if the PS3 is such a bad system buyers would avoid it all together.

Also, If the Xbox 360 fans are so satisfied and happy with the console, I dont know why they cant be confident of the X1 and help MS now that the company is kinda losing money.

1) Claming selling isn't because of SW because if it were the attach ratio would be higher is basically saying it is bad.

2) Vita and WiiU attach ratio is higher because of more time on the market. Or would you say the Wii didn't sold based on good games because Ps360 have better attach ratio?

3) Please show evidence that having 3 games per hw sold for a 9 months old system is bad or cut your anti-sony preaching.

1) If software was selling the PS4, then please tell me... Which software is selling the PS4? The highest selling PS4 exclusive is Killzone at 1.82 million according to VGC.

2) That's not true. The PS4 has outsold the Wii U a few months ago. Mario Kart 8 had released to an install base of 6.5 million people. The PS4 was at 8 million at that time. Mario Kart 8 outsold Killzone and Second Son - both of which were out on the market longer than Mario Kart 8 - all within in 3 days.

Even New Super Luigi U, which was basically just retail DLC for New Super Mario Bros U, outsold Infamous: Second Son; a PS4 exclusive!

Also, I would hope the PS360 would have a higher attach rate since they're both over 80 million sold - but if we're going to talk about last gen, then we'd have to include the original Wii, which had a higher attach rate than the PS360, but that's another conversation for another time.

3) Once again, it's not bad - but considering that the Wii U is at 7 games per system, that is very worrying at 10 million units sold!

1) WiiU have sold 49M Sw? So for you ps4 isn't selling for the games, so the same is valid for WiiU that have so many great games but still don't sell Hw. Today we learnt that sw don't sell hw.

2) Do you understand what attach ratio means? How much sw were sold relative to hw. If you new it you wouldn't say Wii attach ratio is greater than x360 or ps3. X360 have a better ratio than even PS2 (around 10,5 for 360 but ps2 is like 9,5).

3) All console increase the attach ratio over time until stability close to gen end. I have about 150 (120 retail) games for ps3 and just 1 for Ps4 and that isn't because of lack of game.

4) Mk8 was launched after a drought of several months, is one of the top franchises for ninty and were bundled like crazy. Do you think Wii Sports would sell 80M without bundle or that it is better than galaxy because sold 3x more? Or that the main reason for Wii selling was it? If you take the mandatory bundles from Wii the attach ratio would drop to 7 so I guess it wasn't bought for the games but just the hype right?

1) I'm not sure if you're trolling or not. Software does sell hardware. There's far too many examples that I needn't waste my time.

2) No, you're right here. I'll leave it at that, because it's off topic.

3) Uh huh. Damage control.

4) Alright. Sounds like you understand my point. Software clearly isn't selling the PS4. No one knows exactly what is. You not having much of an argument right now shows that you finally understand that.

Alright. So, don't reply to this. All I wanted to do was provide some education. I'm glad I was able to provide some for you. Have a good day!

It would be true to say that new titles released on the PS4, X1 and WiiU do get a boost from their respective software droughts, but if that was a significant factor in TLOU:R's success then we'd be seeing a similarly significant effect across many other titles. We aren't.

Instead we see TLOU:R's 1st week actually surpassing that of almost all other major releases (WD and MK8 are the only 2 recent home console exceptions) and it almost matching the 1st week of inFamous:SS (which had by far the largest opening of any infamous title). Heck, it almost managed to pass the LT sales of both the PS4 and X1 versions of TR:DE combined. Another 'unnecessary' remaster.

People can spend all day debating on necessity or justification of its existence but at the end only one thing matters; There was a strong demand for TLOU:R, Sony capitalized on that, and now we are seeing that demand manifest as sales.

Generic Nintendo Fanboy: Idiots, it is only selling cuz of hype, watch it die in 2015 haahahah

Lol they don't understand playstation home consoles usually sell great and have long legs.

This nearly put me in the hospital.

Sony is just repeating with PS4 the progressive approach it had with PS3, but this time it hasn't the huge handicap of PS3 high price (and high production costs), add some big PR blunders made by both MS and Ninty (the former pissing users off as wasps, the second killing with Wii the very brand it wanted to reuse in its successor, Wii should have been graduallly killed AFTER wii U launch, NOT many months BEFORE), HW that can run quite well most games at an affordable price and that's quite simple to program, a good attitude towards even the smallest devs and towards users, and you get the recipe for "unexplainable" success.

I think it's stupid that he said this publicly. It takes away all the hard work people put in to revealing it and marketing the console. Now it just seems like a big fluke.

the PS4 is the fastest selling console in history, i believe (I oculd be slightly wrong). It would be rather cocky to say that it is doing exact what they predicted. The true of the matter is that he at least sounds honest and sincere about his expectations of the PS4 sales. a little bit of honest isnt a bad thing after all the lies and deception generated by those in the industry recently.

That's very impressive still - considering, according to VGC, the PS4 is at 2.6
