I think it was for sale and after big success it became later free to play. But that could be wrong, I'm not too much interested in that stuff.

It's a game that has been released dozens of times across many platforms - many of the games having different graphics (from black and white to color), different modes, etc. In other words, it's a franchise.

I'm kind of sad because of all the butthurt people here. It was a joke, get it? A joke! If anything, he expressed a wish to play more on the Wii U but not being able to due to there being no games that interest him on it. At least he has a Wii U and has enjoyed it as far as it's been possible... D'uh.

There's a big difference between recent re-releases with neglible differences compared to a game that has been released across decades, by different publishers sporting entirely different modes and in some cases different rules compared to the original.

Yep, but maybe he'll port it just for himself and he won't release it to the public. Then next year, on a hot and slow Summer day, he'll casually announce to the world: "I and only I can play Minecraft U! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
