Forums - Gaming - Is the analogue stick the greatest improvement gaming has ever had?

I think the set up of having your thumbs on the left and right side of your console controller or handheld is the most important. Not all games play better with analog stick or digital pad. Almost all games play well with two thumbs... Except the few games with point and click, touch, or motion control.

I second this, gaming wouldn't feel as good if we all didn't have thumbs. And opposable ones at that, too. Such innovation.

Electro-mechanical games aren't video games.

The biggest improvements were probably microprocessors (you would only have stiff like PONG without them) and exchangeable cartridges.

They are arcade games though, and an early predecessor.

Going just by just by traditional video games, the first was introduced in 1971, still predating the Magnavox by 4 years.

1 year.  The Magnavox Oddyssey launched in 1972.  As I said before, same year as Pong in the arcade.

Hmm, you're right. My bad. Was under the impression that it launched in 1975, but that's the year it was discontinued.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

I don't think it's the greatest one, but it's certainly up there! It did change 3D gaming after all!

Anybody who played on the Atari VCS/2600 can tell you the correct answer... the pause button. Seriously, how many times did I have to throw away a high score run because you couldn't pause Atari games.

Damn.  That's a good one.   I recall many times where I had to do something in the middle of a game and it sucked because there was nothing you could do about it.   The ablity to pause is taken for granted and it's time it received just dues for its contribution to video game progress....literally.

And they didn't let you save your game progress either.

Think on that for a moment.  Then add in the types of games found in arcades versus a home console.

You had to have skills.. for me the pause button is like a huge step to the casualsation (I know that isn't a real word) of gaming.
there is a reason it doesn't work in competitve online games..

I think it probably is the most important thing. Some people will argue going 2D to 3D.

Personally i would have rated motion controls up there for some genres t if developers (including Nintendo) did not give up on it or think its a gimmick from the start and never game it a chance. Motion controls had the potential to develop into something very precise. We saw towards the end of the gen with motion plus and ps move the potential that could had been.

Sadly it was a mix of "hardcore" gamers not excepting it cause well... we just don't wanna move a lot.. and developers went too casual with it while that audience already left due to phones and tablets..
