Forums - Gaming - Is the analogue stick the greatest improvement gaming has ever had?

3D graphics.. You spoiled kids who think its natural to have them.. We old people had to use our imagination to make it feel more then two stick men shooting huge ass pixels at each other..

As a primarily PC gamer, I wouldn't really say so. I think online gaming created the most new opportunities out of all (hardware) implementations.

Analog's got nothing on rumble.

I personally really dislike rumble, I would never spend money on a rumble pack just so my controller shakes, doesn't really add much to the game

Great stuff but I wouldn't want to miss rumble. I hate games that don't use it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Definitely an improvement to modern gaming. Not THE best, but it was a welcoming improvement. I remember in Super Mario 64, I had to move the camera with the yellow C buttons, and it was mildly annoying after being accustomed to dual analog sticks.

its important to take note of the fact that the n64 did not actually have an analogue stick it had a digital one but yeah its probably the most important feature

as an old pc gamer then i would say the Voodoo card.. That really kicked off the entire 3D gaming.. Online gaming is an evolution of LAN gaming.. Aka "we nerdy kids didn't want to get together anymore, I want to stay in mom's basement"

Electro-mechanical games aren't video games.

The biggest improvements were probably microprocessors (you would only have stiff like PONG without them) and exchangeable cartridges.

They are arcade games though, and an early predecessor.

Going just by just by traditional video games, the first was introduced in 1971, still predating the Magnavox by 4 years.

1 year.  The Magnavox Oddyssey launched in 1972.  As I said before, same year as Pong in the arcade.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

I think the set up of having your thumbs on the left and right side of your console controller or handheld is the most important. Not all games play better with analog stick or digital pad. Almost all games play well with two thumbs... Except the few games with point and click, touch, or motion control.

The D-pad had more of an impact to me. Old joysticks were imprecise and always breaking. The D-pad for 2d games was a revolution and part of how NES revived the industry. Analogue sticks were a nice improvement for 3D, but didn't have quite as much impact.
