Forums - Gaming - What is happening to gaming? Gamescom sucked! Weird games, no price cuts, etc.

Since the OP made it pretty clear that his only wish for gamescom was more or less to have Sony announce exclusives he could use in the console war, I'd say that I'm quite happy that he's disappointed with the event.

I feel similarly. I have enjoyed Xbox press conference better for the most part and i think Sony is diluting itself too much with the indies. They took up the majority of their conference.

This is the result of the previous gen have beeing rushed out. Major publishers have disappeared and the game output of the remaining ones just isnt enough. Microsoft seemed to solve that problem with paying for third party exclusivity, wich is a perfectly acceptable strategy (many forget Sony did the exact same thing to SEGA with the PS1. I guess the internet wasnt such a big factor back then). Companies have their strengths and weaknesses, and i just dont understand what the problem is when Microsoft uses one of its strengths to get a competitive advantage.
With that said, the market is a different place from the PS1 era and all third party projects lost to exclusivity mean a dryer gaming landscape. Indies quite honestly dont fill the void. Sony is visibly trying to rush these indies into beeing the new publishers of tomorrow, but its not gonna happen easily. There are some indie games that are making it to the next level, but aside from no man's sky nothing i would put on retail level.

So, in conclusion, this new generation is reaping the (rotten) seeds planted in the rushed previous gen. Despite all the flak, Nintendo was the only company going at a steadier and more sustainable pace for the market and ended up shunned by it. I dont predict things will get any better. I expect the rift between companies and gamers will continue to grow and the market will contract as more gamers lose interest and more companies vie for the cheap mobile games instead of the riskier productions. Unlike other markets the videogames market vies of variable software availability. The reduction of the software variety in offer sends the market not to maturity, but to decline, as consumer look to fulfill their entertainment needs on other markets like movies and TV series that offer bigger variety.

Not to be all gloom, i think the problem can be averted if first parties pick up the slack and expand their studios. That might be why people got so pissed off with the TR thing.

I was fairly happy. I like all types of games and there was plenty that peaked my interest.

I really don't know what the hell were you expecting from Gamescom, but I was pretty satisfied! It wasn't as good as E3 obviously, but it was still decent!

The only thing that I was dissapointed in was the lack of price cuts for PS3 and X360. Seriously, it's pathetic now the pricing model they have in place for these systems.

...snip...

i don't think it is possible for me to disagree more.

sony isn't diluting itself it is diversifying itself.   if you only make/promote one kind of game you'll only get one kind of gamers.  believe it or not,.. a lot of people are like myself and are enjoying indies far more than the next generically, crappy AAA borefest.   i mean for fucks sake, how many dark shooters can one play before one just needs to play anything else.

but the proof is in the numbers.  ps4 is slaughtering xbox so there is no question,.. ps4's strategy is better.   a few guys on the forums can bitch and moan about what is or is not a game but minecraft is one of the most sellingest games ever.  even more than GTA.  if you don't think there is an aundience for games other than the AAA titles you are cray cray.

anyways, i love sony's focus on diversity in games.   i wouldn't have it any other way.

Well you must of missed the many full titles shown at Gamescom. Bloodborne, The Order 1886, Hellblade, WILD, Until Dawn, Quantum Break, Silent Hill, MGS V, Middle Earth:Shadow of Moridor, FarCry 4,DayZ, Fable Legends, Infamous SS:First Light

There were big games and small games, enough to go around for just about everybody. I think sometimes people see a lot of indies being shown and immediately dismiss anything else because of their presence. Whether you like them or not, indies are a thing. They are smaller and therefore much cheaper and easier to make. That is why they outstrip big AAA like titles. Its not like just because they are there we are getting less AAA. AAA games do a fine job of dwindling their own numbers due to their high costs and overly long dev cycles.
