| Viktor said: Most apparent example- Is how the opinion about paying to play online changed after Sony introduced their PS+ service, sure they were somewhat clever by renting out old games but basically you have to be subscribed if you want to play online. Also it´s funny how a similar service like EA Access gets hated by the very same people, I´m sure the opinions would have been quite less hateful if Sony didn´t block this service and therefore became Xbox exclusive. |
I have to defend Sony on that one too. Online Play is an expense for the game developers and if you don't pay for it there's something wrong. Either you'll get a bad service or it will not be sustainable for the service providers (and the Online will close way too soon) or you're overpaying other products (which makes the business model sustainable). I much rather prefer to pay for everything I use (following this principle I somehow opt by much better deals in my life) than naively thinking there are free lunches.
Paying for Online was inevitable and thank god Sony realized it in time. When the Online was free on PlayStation, gamers got expensive consoles and epheremal online experiences while Sony got financial losses. When the Online became paid, gamers got cheap consoles and long lasting online experiences (I hope :)) while Sony got financial profits. Of course there's more to it than just the Online but the point is that everything became much more fair. Who doesn't want to play Online does not use those resources and therefore does not pay for it. And who just want to try it for 1 or 2 months, only pays for that time period.
You might have seen some people "changing" their opinion about paid Online (because they criticized Xbox Live and now they don't do the same about PS+) but most probably that's because Live is very expensive and very poor on offer deals while PS+ is just the opposite.
Regarding EA Access, I'm not aware of that. Anyway, I'm not sure whether you can compare it to a console online service.
