Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why are people saying the 3DS is selling badly?

Did I say that?

"PS3 WAS compared to PS2...a LOT. 3DS is compared to DS because it's a direct successor. PS4 is often compared to PS3 (it's dominating it) and even PS2 (it's comfortably ahead of it)."

You didn't not say it. So you acknowledge that the PS3 is a direct successor as much as the PS4 is?

Alright, that's good. At least you aren't trying to make up excuses as to why the PS3 can't be compared to the PS2.

I am saying that 3DS should be compared to DS as much as PS3 should be compared to PS2 or PS4 to PS3. They have all been compared.

Look up the threads and articles about the ps3 being discontinued due to low sales. When the ps3 launched and the shortages ended, the doom was overwhelming. You might not have noticed if, perhaps, you were not a ps fan, but it was real. Even friends of mine who weren't anything close to gamers were telling all about how terriblly the ps3 was doing in 2008.

The sales are not awful to me, but they were bad considering how much better the wii and xb360 were doing and the sales of ps2 (as opposed to gamecube and xbox). They were bad since Sony expected much more from the console and they had to cut the price several times to the point of the company bleeding tons of money. You don't cut the price so soon if the sales are actually good. Neither Sony nor the gaming community saw the sales as good, so no they weren't good.

OK! Maybe you're right about the PS3, but the 3DS' situation is still nowhere as bad as the PS3's situation... :-/

This was mostly the conjecture PS2 fanboys-turned-360 fanboys trying to make themselves feel better about not a having a PS3 for whatever reason (mostly the overwhelming pricing from 2006-2009). I don't know if we can say the bad publicity was as drastic, nor am I saying they were wrong to not a have a PS3 at the time (although I bet they would never have given the 360 any consideration had the PS3 and 360 been evenly-priced simultaneously from the get go) but the propanganda in context wasn't any different from those who went NES-to-Genesis instead of NES-to-SNES when Nintendo's marketing failed to justify the pricepoint of the SNES early on.

I did indeed come to that conclusion since your last quote, but thanks anyway.

In terms of units sold, it will end up worse for 3DS though due to it being a Nintendo console vs. PS3 being a Sony console. Just like Nintendo games have long legs, Sony consoles have long legs.

After your question to me I wasn't sure.

Apparently the 3DS is selling badly because it's selling worse than the 2nd best selling video game system of all time!

It's also not likely to pass PSP, which some still call a failure with a bad library. It'll be the worst selling Nintendo handheld ever, unless something major happens. So far this year, it's on track to be the lowest or 2nd lowest year of its life.

I think it will pass the psp easily, nintendo just needs to add a new peripheral to an umpcoming hardware revision like what they did to DSi by adding a camera, or make a slim 3DS I mean most DS's sold were slim DS's.

It's highly unlikely that 3DS passes PSP. They've already had 2 remodels of the 3DS and aggressive price drops/bundles.

it is selling bad cos it is doing bad compared to last year...

The 3DS's sales are pretty good in their own right, but when considering the whole picture (Nintendo's previous handhelds, the 3DS sales last year etc) they're pretty mediocre.

Everyone knows that because we can do the comparisons. I'm just saying that it's a fact that 3DS is selling a lot worse than its predecessor (and hell, it will end up being the worst selling Nintendo handheld). Now, we can look for reasons for the decline as well to make things interesting.

Reactions are relative to expectations and expectations are relative to historical sales. Basically, everything is relative. What defines the success of consoles otherwise?

Well conrezt is super important to many things. I think comparing console sales across generations needs to include comparisons of the markets and other factors as well.
