Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Former Nintendo Indie boss says "The name Wii U is abysmal"

"The value of the GamePad hasn’t been justified."

That's more of an issue than the name. Nintendo hasn't been able to sell the value of the gamepad to the general public whatsoever. On top of that, the cost of the gamepad brings the specs of the system down, which is something people can understand right away.

If you're going with a high-cost gimmick/innovation, you'd better have a plan for selling it. Other than Nintendoland, I can't think of much that put the gamepad over as an important piece of tech. Quite honestly, it seems like it was built with the Japanese market, and only the Japanese market, in mind.

Too much blame on the name, it all sits on the games (and partially price)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I think they should've just ditched the Wii brand entirely. It was clear by about 2011 that it had worn out its brand appeal. People now associate the term "Wii" with basically something outdated/passe, just like if you were to say "flip phone" people would look at you like some nut who's been living in a cave since 2005.

People look at me puzzled when I say "oh I have a new Wii" ... it's as if I'm telling them I just joined MySpace or something, it's like they want to say "don't you know there's this thing called Facebook and Instagram and Twitter now?".

There's nothing wrong with the name, the biggest two problems it had was 1) They decided not to market the bloomin thing and 2) They delayed a shedload of first party titles.

The console itself and each first party title so far should have had as big a marketing push that Mario Kart 8 had. You'd probably have over 10m Wii Us in homes by now if they had.

Yep the name is terrible, could have randomly picked letters from a game of Scrabble and they would have had a better name.

LMAO going in!

Bang Bang!

I was a Nintendo fanboy when the "Nintendo Revolution" was announced. I was hyped for that console. Then they released Wii and I'm no longer a Nintendo fanboy.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

The name is bad but it has much bigger problems than that.

The name is indeed not it's best asset. I know people that have played the wii U that think the 'tablet' is just a nice peripheral of the wii. Not even the foggiest that they were playing a brand new next gen console.
That's when you know something is wrong.

Of course, saying the name is that important is kind of the easy way out.

Like i said, if the Wii never existed, Wii U would have been a decent name but since the Wii did exist and Nintendo just tried to cash off the name, it is bad.
