It's at least something they should consider, I mean the people that buy Nintendo hardware would still buy their games even if they released on other systems and you could also add in a probably quite large amount of people that have some interest in a couple Nintendo franchises but wouldn't buy a system especially for them.
I think we all know that software is the money maker in gaming, not hardware.

You and I know in the eyes of many people here that is even worse than going mobile, but bless you for saying it. IMHO i could care less either way, i never had an issue with getting two consoles, but it would be fun to watch just for the meltdowns.

Yeah the meltdowns would be huge, but it really does make more sense than a lot of people would like to admit. I mean being a platform holder makes sense for Sony, because they make a ton of cash through third party games and now also their subscription service, but Nintendo has neither of those, they basically make almost all their money through their own software, especially on console.
Handheld may still look a little different, but since the collapse of the dedicated handheld market really only seems to be couple more years off, it doesn't look like that is something that will work for much longer either.
So Nintendo can either take the risk and try and create another extremely successful console or consider the much safer route of concentrating on what is really pulling the people towards their systems, Nintendo games, and just cut out the dedicated hardware barrier.
