Forums - Gaming - Sonic: The most overrated game ever?

Sonic 2 is still one of my favorite platformers ever. I remember when it came out thinking it was like Mario on speed.

Personally I could never get into Sonic games. Any of them.

I have Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Adventure right here for my Mega Drive and DreamCast, all bought during their times but never fully played. Also have Lost World since recently because of MK8's promotion, but the incentive to choose it as my free game wasn't really for the game itself, rather my curiosity for it's DLC. They're all hardly played, I can't even remember what Adventure plays like at all... I also played Sonic '06 briefly on a 360 of a friend of mine, but let's not get into that game.

I've always found the Rings-mechanic to be flawed, and the design of the levels in the games themselves to be counterproductive to the aim of speedy platforming. The lay-out, the obstacles and the enemies just never seem to match it for the most part. In fact, Super Mario 3D World contains several levels that are better at this speedy platforming concept than I think any Sonic game (I played) has ever been.

But, to say the first game or the series is overrated, no.

The game, the series and especially the character definitely have their place in videogame history, and it deserves it's recognition.

See, that's not my idea of good game design, if you have to learn through trial and error repetition.

In Classic Sonic's case, I think it is. The original idea was that they tried to make the levels seem shorter each time you played them because you couldn't save in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. If you got a Game Over and had no continues left, you had to start from the beginning. You could argue that this way of level design isn't exactly the best for the later games where you can save, but we're talking about the classics here. You can save in Sonic 3, but the original design is still present there, so if you don't like that, then Sonic's not for you.

They could have circumvented this simply by adding the ability to save. It's not like you couldn't do that in 4th gen games.

No that title goes to the Last of US.

That's really not the point.. You understand that you can beat Sonic 1 in like an hour, right? Not being able to save adds tons of replay value to the game because of its level design. Sonic 3 just has saving for convenience but is still supposed to be trial & error.

A certain user even suggsted that VGChartz's name should be changed to "www.TheLastOfUsRemastered.com" and I agree with him!

No way. I have had more fun with old school Sonic games than I had with Mario. I still play Sonic on occasion.

Trial and error is not an acceptable bandaid for a lack of content in my view.
